At long last, something to raise our glasses to literally. The East African Community (EAC) has finally agreed to harmonise taxes on alcoholic beverages across member states.
For consumers, traders, and anyone tired of price shocks at the border, this is a toast-worthy moment of progress.
For years, crossing from Kenya to Uganda or from Tanzania to Rwanda meant more than a change in scenery. It often came with a confusing change in the price of your favourite bottle.
A beer that costs 200 shillings at home could cost twice as much just kilometres away. These erratic price differences, driven by inconsistent tax policies, frustrated consumers and discouraged cross-border trade.
EAC aligns excise duties on alcoholic beverages
Now, with the EAC aligning excise duties on alcohol, a new era begins, one where the price of a Tusker, Nile Special, or Serengeti Lager will be more predictable across the region.
It’s not just a win for weekend revellers, it’s a signal that East Africa is serious about moving toward economic unity.
Beyond happy hour, this move will help curb smuggling, support legitimate businesses, and simplify trade for regional brewers and distributors. It’s also a sign that the EAC can find consensus, at least on matters close to the heart (and the bar counter).

More to be done on tobacco and fuel taxes
Of course, there’s still work to be done. The bloc is yet to find agreement on fuel and tobacco taxes critical sectors that carry bigger economic stakes. But for now, let’s celebrate this small but significant victory.
It shows that regional cooperation is possible when member states find common ground especially if that ground involves a cold drink at the end of a long day.
