Kenyans have launched a petition to gather signatures aimed at compelling Francis Atwoli, the Secretary General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), to retire from his position, which he has held since 2001.
The petition is led by Fatuma Abdulkadir Adan, a lawyer who argues that while Atwoli has made significant contributions to the labour movement in Kenya over the decades, it is time for him to step down as he is over 60 years old. She believes he deserves a well-earned retirement.
Fatuma emphasises that the call for Atwoli’s retirement is not rooted in ageism but arises from the desire to keep COTU dynamic, relevant, and effective.
“A transition in leadership could provide an opportunity for COTU to explore new horizons and implement innovative strategies in labour advocacy. Francis Atwoli’s rich legacy will always hold a place in the history of labour in Kenya, but every organisation must evolve to maintain its influence,” she stated.
Kenyans Launch Online Petition to Ouster Atwoli
Furthermore, Fatuma asserts that Atwoli’s retirement would open the door for new visionary leaders who are motivated to address the contemporary challenges facing the workforce in Kenya.

She urges Kenyans to support the petition so that COTU’s leadership can effectively meet the needs of its members. “Sign this petition to support the call for Francis Atwoli to retire, ushering in a new era of leadership at COTU to ensure it continues to meet the needs of its members and adapt to the ever-changing labour landscape in Kenya,” stated Fatuma.
COTU SG Responds to Retirement Calls
Activist Hanifa Adan has also joined the online campaign calling for Atwoli’s ouster. In a statement dated Sunday, May 11, 2025, Hanifa reported that 734 signatures have been collected thus far.
“We’re at 734 signatures! Thank you so much. Please share this petition widely to help us get Atwoli out of office! Sign here and spread the word!” exclaimed the outspoken activist.
In a recent interview with Sunday Nation, Atwoli addressed the calls for his retirement by defending his lengthy tenure and contributions to the labour movement in Kenya. He highlighted the significant improvements achieved during his leadership, including the adoption of progressive labour laws.

Atwoli noted that leaders tend to face criticism while in office but are often appreciated after they step down.
“I have observed this pattern with Kenyan presidents. They are criticised while in power but praised once they leave. This has occurred with Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Moi, Mwai Kibaki, and most recently, Uhuru Kenyatta,” Atwoli explained.
