Religious leaders occupy a revered position in Kenyan society, guiding communities, providing spiritual support, and frequently serving as voices of peace and conscience.
However, a troubling pattern has emerged with a number of these respected figures have met untimely and mysterious deaths.
While their lives were devoted to faith and service, the unanswered questions surrounding their deaths have left behind pain, speculation, and a deep sense of loss.
Father John Maina Ndegwa, a Catholic priest in Nyandarua, was found murdered in Kikopey, Nakuru County, on May 19, 2025, two weeks after hosting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at a parish event.
However, he is not the first cleric to die under unclear circumstances blended with high-voltage politics.

Father John Maina
Father Maina had presided over the Silver Jubilee celebrations of Igwamiti Catholic Parish in Nyahururu on April 27, 2025, where he also presided over the ordination of Father Simon Thuita.
The catholic priest in Nyandarua was found in Kikopey, Nakuru County, on May 19, 2025.
According to Gilgil DCI head Rahamad Wasilwa, the priest’s body appeared to have been dumped at the location, raising suspicions that he could have been killed elsewhere.
DCI has linked the murder of catholic Priest Father John Maina to cash he received from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Investigations into his death are still ongoing.
Sheikh Aboud Rongo
On August 27, 2012, Rogo was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in Mombasa while driving with his family.
His death sparked immediate and violent protests in Mombasa, with supporters blaming Kenyan security forces for the assassination, an allegation the authorities denied.
Rogo gained notoriety for his alleged connections to extremist groups. He was accused of providing support to Somalia’s al-Shabaab militants and was placed on sanctions lists by the United Nations and the United States in 2012 for allegedly offering financial, material, and logistical support to the group.
Sheikh Bakari Mwarangi
Sheikh Salim Bakari Mwarangi was a respected Kenyan Muslim cleric known for his moderate views and active role in countering radicalisation among youth in Mombasa. On November 4, 2014, he was tragically shot and killed while returning home from evening prayers at a mosque in the Likoni area of Mombasa.
According to witnesses, two gunmen on a motorbike approached him, shot him multiple times, and fled the scene.
At the time of his death, Sheikh Mwarangi was a member of the Mombasa Peace Committee and had been actively involved in efforts to guide Muslim youth away from extremist ideologies.
Sheikh Mohammed Idris
Sheikh Mohammed Idris was a prominent Kenyan Muslim cleric and the chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK). On June 10, 2014, he was tragically shot and killed by unknown assailants near a mosque in the Likoni area of Mombasa, shortly after attending morning prayers.
The assailants’ motives remain unclear, but his outspoken stance against extremism and his leadership role in CIPK made him a target for radical factions within the Muslim community.

Bishop Alexander Kipsang Muge
Alexander Kipsang Muge was the first bishop of the Anglican diocese of Eldoret in Kenya.
On August 14, 1990, Bishop Muge died in a car crash near Kipkaren on the Eldoret–Webuye highway.
The incident occurred just days after the then-Labour Minister had warned him against visiting Busia District, ominously stating that he “would not leave alive.” Defying the threat, Muge proceeded with his visit.
Many say that this was not an accident at all but the direct result of his stand for the Gospel of Jesus Christ in his nation. He was forty-four at the time of his death.

Father John Kaiser
On August 24, 2000, Father Kaiser’s body was discovered along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway near Naivasha.
The Kenyan government claimed the priest committed suicide, saying a shotgun was found near his body and a round of ammunition in his pocket.
However, this conclusion was met with skepticism by many, including the Catholic Church and human rights organizations, who pointed to inconsistencies in the investigation.
Kaiser’s outspoken advocacy for human rights and in particular, the rights of his parishioners earned him many powerful enemies.
He had received death threats and had assisted two women from his parish to contact the Kenyan Federation of Women Lawyers after they said another cabinet minister had allegedly taken advantage of them.
The mysterious deaths of religious leaders like Sheikh Mohammed Idris, Sheikh Salim Bakari Mwarangi, Bishop Alexander Muge, and Father John Kaiser serve as reminders of the risks faced by religious leaders.
Their deaths left more questions than answers, and in many cases, justice remains elusive.
