Schools Closed Ahead Of Matatu Strike
Several schools across the country suspended classes on Monday, May 18, 2026, following transport disruptions linked to nationwide protests over high fuel prices. The disruptions affected the movement of learners, teachers, and school transport services.
The Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA) urged institutions to take precautionary measures in anticipation of planned matatu protests over the fuel price increase. Schools were advised to prioritise safety in case transport systems were affected.
The association warned that the planned nationwide shutdown by transport sector players could significantly disrupt mobility. It is recommended that schools avoid routing transport through congestion-prone areas in Nairobi during peak hours, including the CBD, Mombasa Road, Thika Road, Jogoo Road, Ngong Road, and the Industrial Area.
Some schools subsequently informed parents that learning would not proceed due to uncertainty on the roads. Institutions cited safety concerns for learners and staff, particularly where school buses and public transport services were expected to be affected.
