Moi Girls’ School Nairobi ranks among the top extra-county public secondary schools in Kenya. The institution was established by the Ministry of Education as a girls’ day secondary school in February 1964, using the premises of the former Woodley Primary School.

It was initially intended to cater to the children of many unemployed and low-income families, as there had been no such school in Nairobi before Kenya gained independence.

Moi Girls’ School began with a single stream of 35 girls and two teachers. In May 1965, the Ministry of Education allocated the school a vacant building near the present-day State House Primary School, which was quickly converted into a girls’ hostel to accommodate the entire Form 1 and 2 population of 105 girls.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) later provided funding for the construction of an administration block and a 140-bed dormitory at the main school premises, which was completed in January 1968.

Following this development, the headmistress’s office was converted into the kitchen, the small hall became the dining area, and the girls moved from the State House Primary School residence to the newly constructed dormitory.

The first single-stream class sat for its ‘O’ level examinations in 1967.

In January 1967, the school expanded to a two-stream setup and continued to operate as both a day and boarding school. In 1970, it admitted its first ‘A’ level students, which increased the number of day scholars.

Moi Girls’ School history

In 1974, former President Daniel Arap Moi (then Vice President) was invited to officiate the school’s first fundraising event, or harambee, aimed at constructing another hostel.

Moi accepted the invitation, and as a result, the school was able to build an 80-bed dormitory, which was officially opened in September 1975.

From that point on, the former President actively supported the school’s Board of Governors. Together with the Board, he played a key role in transforming the school into a fully five-streamed boarding institution, equipped with modern learning facilities.

Since its early years, the school has continued to excel in both academic and co-curricular activities.

Mrs. Rebecca Njau served as the first headmistress of Moi Girls, with Mrs. Edith Matiba as her deputy.

The school’s first Chairman of the Board was the late Rt. Rev. John Gatu. The current principal is Mrs. Margaret Njaggah.

Notable alumni of the school include Auditor General Nancy Gathungu, People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, and former Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Olive Mugenda.

To date, Moi Girls’ School Nairobi remains one of the top girls’ schools in the country. It enrolls students from all regions of Kenya, bringing together girls from diverse backgrounds.

Performance

Also, the institution has been among the first choices of many top performers in the national high school entrance examination, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

The last KCPE was administered in 2023 after it was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) under the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The institution has, in the years, maintained a top 20 ranking nationally in every KCSE examination.

School Fees

The government has previously issued a directive to all institutions regarding the total fees parents should pay per year.

The total annual fees per student at Moi Girls School are approximately Ksh40,535, which serves as the fee cap set by the Ministry of Education for extra county schools in Kenya.

However, the total fees may vary from school to school due to additional expenses introduced by respective institutions, such as uniforms, motivation fees, and extra activities.

Some schools charge parents/guardians a high of Ksh80,000 annually.

Location and contacts

The learning institution is located between Kibera Drive and Joseph Kang’ethe Road in Kibera Division of the Nairobi County, seven kilometers West of Nairobi Central Business District.
