The government of Tanzania has suspended the license of the Nation Media Group (NMG) subsidiary Mwananchi Communications Limited.
Through the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), the media company has had its license suspended for the next 30 days.

Consequently, the authority has prohibited the media company from publishing any online content during the time.
In 2001 Mwananchi Communications Ltd was acquired by the Nation Media Group (NMG), which is based in Nairobi, Kenya.

“We regret to inform our esteemed audiences that we shall be ceasing publication across all our online media platform with immediate effect due to Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) suspending all our online media services licenses for 30 days,” a statement from the media company read in part.

Reasons for the Suspension in Tanzania
According to a statement from Mwananchi Communications Limited, the regulatory authority has accused them of publishing content that violates content regulation laws.
“Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) cited publication of prohibited content that violates the Electronics and Postal Communications (Online Content) Regulations, 2020,” added the statement.
Mwananchi communications, through The Citizen publication, posted an animation video online depicting President Samia Suluhu watching television.
However, every station the head of stating was changing to aired citizens lamenting about the deplorable state of the country and calling for change from the government.
“Political status of our country is not good at all. First of all, we as the opposing party, we are in a funeral, our leader has been kidnapped and murdered violently,” one person stated before the cartoon depiction of the president changed the station.
“I have a request to make to the president, please do not ignore,” a person in the switched station said.
In September, police arrested Tanzania’s top opposition figures as the authorities moved to block a mass protest in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.
Moreover, Chadema party, the opposition, accused Suluhu’s government of returning the country to the repressive tactics of her predecessor, John Magufuli.
