ODPP Breaks Silence on CS Muturi’s Son Links to Money Laundering

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has addressed reports linking the son of Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi to money laundering charges.

A document circulating on social media, reportedly from the ODPP, listed the names of four individuals, including Muturi’s son, Leslie Muturi, as suspects in violent protests and financial crimes.

Leslie Muturi has been listed as the former personal assistant to his father when he served as the Attorney General of Kenya.

Others on the list include Embakasi Central Member of Parliament (MP) Benjamin Gathiru Mwangi (alias Mejjadonk), Embakasi North MP James Gakuya and Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje.

Is Leslie Muturi Implicated in Money Laundering? ODPP Explains

The ODPP has dismissed the document as fake, clarifying that no such charges have been approved.

The fake document, dated September 26, 2024, was addressed to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and bore the signature of a purported Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Vincent Monda.

It accused Leslie Muturi and the MPs of conspiracy to commit a felony, money laundering, and financial crimes under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the ODPP urged members of the public to ignore the false claims and refrain from spreading unverified information.

“Therefore, the content and structure are falsified, and no charges against the individuals mentioned have been presented or approved by the ODPP,” the statement read.

The incident comes amid questions over an earlier abduction of CS Muruti’s son and the man behind other reported state abductions.

While honouring the summon by the DCI on Tuesday, January 14, the CS stated that he had confidence in the relevant authorities as they carried out their work and sought answers over his son’s abduction.

“This matter remains deeply personal to me as a father, and I am committed to supporting every effort to ensure justice is served. I want to express my confidence in our investigative agencies and their unwavering pursuit of the truth in this case,” he said.

Who Abducted Muturi’s Son

However, in a Sunday, January 12, press statement, Muturi condemned the rising cases of abductions, calling for swift action to end the crime spree.

He expressed the emotional distress his family endured after his son, Leslie Muturi, was abducted in June 2024 in Lavington, Nairobi, saying that despite holding the position of Attorney General at the time, he was never provided with details of the incident.

In a recorded statement to the DCI, the CS revealed that when he decided to physically visit the State House to urge the President to take action on the matter, it was disclosed that the National Intelligence Service (NIS) was holding his son.

“The President joked, asking why anyone would want to arrest a young person over the Gen Z demonstrations. He even mentioned that Kiunjuir’s son and the sons of other officials had been involved in similar demonstrations.”

“Standing outside the pavilion, I heard the President ask Haji if he was holding my son, Noordin confirmed, that indeed he was holding my son and the President instructed him to release Leslie immediately,” the CS narrated.
