Only 27 percent of Kenyans, who are not from the Mount Kenya region believe that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is doing an excellent job.
Poll results from the latest Tifa survey have revealed that while other regions of the country support the impeachment of the DP, residents of the Mount Kenya region believe that he is executing his duties well.
Additionally, the polls indicated that 35 percent of Kenyans who believe Gachagua should be impeached accused him of being discriminatory in favor of his own (Mt. Kenya) community.
“Overall, Kenyans are quite divided over the current effort to remove Gachagua from office by impeachment, with only a slight plurality in support of it (41% vs. 38%).
“However, a clear contrast is seen between residents of the Mt. Kenya region and those of all other regions, with well over twice as many of the former opposed to it (69% vs. 28%).” The primary reason for supporting the Deputy President’s impeachment is the perception that he exhibits a biased attitude and rhetoric favoring his own community from the Mt. Kenya region.

Other Reasons Why Kenyans Want Gachagua Impeached
On the other hand, 20 percent of those who want the deputy president removed from power believe that he has been a poor performer and stood for bad leadership.
Also, 17 percent indicated that he was just a failure and did not give any more reasons.
“The primary reason for supporting the Deputy President’s impeachment is the perception that he exhibits a biased attitude and rhetoric favoring his own community from the Mt. Kenya region.
“Though “poor performance”/”bad leadership” (20%) may also include such a failure together with various others. Significantly, however, a considerable proportion who favor his impeachment could (or would) not offer any reason for doing so (17%).”
However, those who oppose the impeachment have noted that Gachagua is being unfairly targeted. Also, they have opined that he should be left to finish his term.
“Opponents of the Deputy President’s impeachment believe he is being unfairly targeted, praise his leadership, or feel he and the President should finish their term without addressing the charges directly.”

Court Refuses to Stop Impeachment
The deputy president is expected to appear before the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 8, to defend himself against an impeachment motion that cites 11 grounds for his proposed removal from office.
A total of 19 cases have been filed to stop Gachagua’s removal from office and Parliament has asked the High Court to consolidate them.
In the latest case, High Court Judge Bahati Mwamuye for the second time declined to grant interim orders stopping the impeachment on Monday, October 7.
