An American tourist and former Manager of Aspira Kenya, Yoeal Haile has reportedly been in police detention for three days.
CNN International Correspondent Larry Madowo confirmed the arrest on June 30, questioning why Yoeal was held at Upper Hill/Capitol Hill police station in Nairobi without any charges filed against him.
Madowo noted that the Kenya police officers have refused to release Yoeal, allow bail, or charge him in court.
“My friend Yoeal Haile, an American tourist, is still being held at Upper Hill/Capitol Hill police station in Nairobi without charge for the 3rd day now,” he said.
“That’s longer than the law allows. Kenyan police have refused to release him, allow bail, or charge him in court.”

The arrest of Yoeal Haile adds to the recent wave of abductions of Kenyan citizens who are vocal in the #RejectFinanceBill2024 protests with questions being raised on the motive behind the arrests.
Most of those arrested have been vocal about the anti-tax protests on X Spaces, a feature that allows users to host live audio conversations with others on the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Of note is that abductions are a gross violation of human rights and amount to arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearance as prohibited under Article 29 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
Many of those released had no physical injuries but had been left so traumatised that they did not want to speak about their experience, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Faith Odhiambo said.
“Some were left in plantations outside Nairobi, while others were thrown on the roadsides and left really shaken.”
Increased Abductions in the Country
Similarly, former Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter was arrested on June 30 as he left a church event in the Kileleshwa area, Nairobi but later released as confirmed by the DCI.
Popular social media commentator Gabriel Oguda was freed after reportedly being abducted by persons believed to be police officers. He was among at least ten people who were rounded up on Tuesday, June 25.

The High Court had issued an order directing the DPP, AG, DCI and NIS to immediately and unconditionally release all social media users allegedly abducted after expressing their dissatisfaction with the unpopular 2024 Finance Bill.
Justice Chacha Mwita restrained the state from abducting vocal social media and political activist Gabriel Oguda and 12 others once released.
The other 12 are listed as Osama Otero who has been holding popular X Spaces opposing the Finance Bill 2024, Shadrack Kiprono alias Shad, Ernest Nyerere, Zadock Nyamari, Dr Austin Omondi alias Japrado, Billy Simani, Drey Mwangi, Frank Githiaka, Brian Ngula, and Florence Atieno.
