Rachel Wandeto, who succumbed to burn injuries at Kenyatta National Hospital after she was allegedly doused with petrol and set ablaze in Mwiki, Kasarani, Nairobi, has had her burial halted after her husband allegedly ran away with the burial permit.
On May 28, the family and friends of Racheal gathered at the Mona Lisa Montezuma Funeral Home to collect the body for burial. Still, they were unable to clear the release of the body due to a lack of a permit.
According to Ndungu Nyoro, the permit was with her husband, as he was the one who was supposed to sign for the release of the body. He, however, did not show up with their two children, leaving the family unsettled and with no information on Wandeto’s husband’s whereabouts or plans.
“At Mona Lisa Montezuma Funeral Home this morning, the family of Rachel Wandeto gathered ready to collect her body. Everything was in place. They just needed to clear the body, then proceed with the journey home ready for burial. The burial permit was, however, in the hands of her husband. He was the one who came to sign for the body’s release. But he didn’t show up. He and their two children,” Ndugu noted.

Rachel Wandeto Attack
Rachel, the gospel singer and mother to Abigail and Gian, post-mortem examination revealed that the deceased had suffered from 85% burns on her body.
The deceased passed away while she was receiving treatment from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on May 16, with her death being speculated to have been caused by a tattoo of the Kenyan president, William Ruto.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, announcing the death of the artist, urged Kenyans to refrain from causing harm to others due to political differences.
Additionally, the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, condemned the attack and called for the maintenance of peace.
According to the government pathologist, Johannes Oduor, the severe burns on Rachel had caused serious damage to her skin, leading to complications.
During the post-mortem examination, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Unit, who were present, collected samples to help with the investigations.

Following her attack, DCI arrested a taxi driver on May 13 who was linked to the death of Wandeto.
According to the DCI the Rachel was a regular passenger who took the prime suspect’s taxi regularly.
Further, the DCI also emphasized that the prime suspect arrested was the last known person who had communicated with the victim before her death.
The suspect was detained for 10 days at the Madaraka Law Courts as investigations were carried out on the attack on the gospel artist.
Wandeto’s Difference with Husband
After Wandeto moved to tattoo Ruto’s face and the two-term slogan on her body, her husband asked her to either leave their matrimonial home in Kasarani or remove the tattoo.
Rachel, however, maintained her stance, adding that she would rather terminate the marriage than remove the tattoo.
