The Department of Education and Vocational Training in Bungoma has stopped with immediate effect, the recruitment process of teachers for 200 permanent and pensionable jobs.
According to a letter from the department obtained by The Kenya Times, the County Public Service Board and the department had failed to come to an agreement on a criterion for shortlisting.
Addressed to the County Public Service Board, the letter raised concerns about the county government’s move to publish the names of shortlisted candidates.
In addition, the department indicated that it had not yet approved the shortlisting process and was waiting for consultation on the matter.
Subsequently, it called for the immediate stop of the recruitment process including interviews towards employment of the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) Teachers.
“As a user department, we have been waiting for consultation to discuss and agree on criteria for shortlisting. The County Public Service Board has presumably published a list of shortlisted candidates. which is in circulation, for interview without any reference to the user Department.
“This is therefore to stop any further processing for interviews towards employment of the ECDE Teachers by the Public Service Board of Bungoma. The Department of Education and Vocational Training will not accept the recruitment process to go on without initial consensus,” the letter read in part.

Shortlist Notice for Teachers Published
In a notice on Friday, May 3, the Keneth Lusaka led county announced that qualified candidates who submitted their applications for the positions should prepare for interviews.
According to the statement, the names of shortlisted candidates had been published, alongside the date, time and venue for the scheduled interviews.
In addition, the job vacancies were meant to accommodate holders of diploma and certificates in education.
“We refer to the advertisement of vacant positions of ECDE Teachers (Diploma) JG “H” (90 Posts) and ECDE Teachers (Certificate), JG “G” (110 Posts) which appeared in the Daily Nation and Standard Newspapers of Wednesday October 25th, 2023.
“Those who applied are requested to check from the Bungoma County Website www.bungoma.go.ke. for the details on Shortlisted Candidates, date, time, and venue for interview,” the notice read in part.

Roles and Responsibilities
The employed teachers will be responsible for organizing and facilitating play and learning activities to enable children to cope with primary school life.
Additionally, the teachers will care and nurture spiritual, moral, social, mental, and physical growth of children. They will also be tasked with preparing and developing play and learning materials for the children.
“Managing ECDE centers, keeping professional records (schemes of work and lesson plans) daily program of activities and ensuring children’s safety and security,” the job advert sent out on October 25, 2023, indicated.
