Safaricom PLC has issued a new update to its airtime purchase policy for customers using the M-Pesa mobile payment service.
In a recent development, Safaricom has lowered the minimum amount required for buying airtime through M-PESA from Ksh5 to a new Ksh1.
The update took effect on Monday, September 16, 2024, and Safaricom urged customers to test the update by purchasing the airtime in an update.
“Hata shilingi ni pesa! Sasa unaweza kununua Safaricom airtime ya kuanzia shilingi moja ukitumia M-Pesa. Angalia M-Pesa balance yako na ujaribu kununua leo,” read the update
It translates to “Even one shilling is worth something! You can now buy Safaricom airtime from Ksh1 from M-Pesa. Check your M-Pesa balance and purchase today.”

Safaricom Making More Revenue
The reduction in the minimum purchase amount shows a shift in Safaricom’s approach to catering to its customer base, especially by targeting those who may have smaller budgets for mobile airtime.
Also, by enabling customers to buy airtime for as little as Ksh1, Safaricom aims to make additional revenue from low-budget spenders.
Further, Safaricom intends to increase customer satisfaction, making it easier for them to buy airtime without committing to larger amounts of money.

Reverse Call Changes
The changes have come barely a month after the telco made changes to their popular reverse call service.
Safaricom limited the service to two free calls only in a day, noting that customers will be charged for the third reverse call that they will make per day.
“The reverse calls are still here. Please note the initiator of the reverse call will only be billed on the third reversal call request of the day when the request is accepted by the sponsor,
“Please note will now be billed 50 cents on the 3rd reverse call request of the day but you will not incur any other costs while using the service for the rest of the day,” Safaricom clarified,” Safaricom said.
