Telco giant Safaricom has once again come out as the leading service provider of voice and data services.
According to the latest report by the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA), Safaricom took the lion’s share in the revenues generated from voice, data, Short Message Service (SMS) and other mobile services.
Of the revenue collected on voice services, the telco giant led significantly with 74.2 per cent share revenue, followed distantly by its competitor Airtel at 21 per cent. Telkom Kenya came third at 4.5 per cent.
Safaricom leads in data services
In terms of data services, Safaricom also enjoyed a significant share of revenue at 74.8 per cent followed by Airtel at 18.3 per cent and Telkom Kenya at 5.0 per cent.
According to the report, other operators excelled in SMS and mobile money services.
SMS service saw Safaricom control 70.0 per cent in share revenue, followed by Airtel at 22.8 per cent, while Finserve Limited came third at 7.2 per cent.

Currently, the mobile money service, M-Pesa, is the company’s biggest revenue earner. Its revenue shares that fell under the Other Mobile Services Category also ranked first at 92.7 per cent followed by airtel at 1.5 per cent and Telkom Kenya at 0.7 per cent.
Expanded customer base
Safaricom’s dominance in the telecommunications industry is attributed to the company’s extensive investment infrastructure. By the end of its financial year 2024, the telco giant had deployed over 803 active 5G sites in 43 counties.

Also, the company has so far laid down 17,000 of fibre-optic cables, leading to an increased internet connectivity to homes and business.

The company continues to lead in terms of its market presence which now stands at 65.9 per cent, while its closest competitor, Airtel has a presence of around 29 per cent.
The firm has scaled up its customer base over the years with the greatest milestone being its launch in Ethiopia.
Since its launch, the company has registered 4.35 million subscribers. The move continues to diversify Safaricom’s income streams.
