Sanlam Allianz Holdings Kenya Plc has announced the retirement of its long-serving Board Chairman, Dr John Simba, and the appointment of Dr Martin Oduor Otieno as the incoming Chairman.
In a statement on June 4, 2026, the company said that the changes will take effect immediately, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership and governance at the board level.
John Simba was elected to the company’s board in December 2001. He was later elected as the chairman in March 2002. He led Allianz Holdings through key developments and institutional growth.
Allianz Holdings appreciated his service, noting his contributions to strengthening governance structures and overseeing the organization through major changes.
The company also confirmed the appointment of Dr Martin Oduor Otieno as the incoming chairman.
Dr Oduor-Otieno is expected to lead the board in the next phase of the company’s growth and strategic direction, effective as of the date of this announcement.
Sanlam Allianz said the leadership change is aimed at ensuring continuity and maintaining strong corporate governance as the company expands its presence in Kenya’s financial services sector.

Dr John P. N. Simba is a seasoned corporate leader and legal professional who has served as the Board Chairman of Sanlam Allianz Holdings Kenya Plc from 2001 to 2026
During his tenure, Dr Simba provided strategic leadership and oversight to the company, helping guide it through key transitions, including rebranding the group from Pan African to Sanlam and now Sanlam Allianz, and growth in the company’s integrity and business in Kenya.
During his tenure as Board Chairman, he oversaw the rebranding of the Group from Pan Africa to Sanlam and Sanlam Allianz.
Dr Simba also played a key role in mergers, acquisitions, and alliances among various companies in the insurance industry over the years and successfully steered the Group towards becoming one of the largest diversified insurance businesses. Recently, under his leadership, the Group successfully completed a Rights Issue, raising capital to support its growth ambitions.
He retires after what the company described as “distinguished service and invaluable contribution” to the organization.

Dr Martin Oduor Otieno takes charge at Sanlam
Dr Martin Oduor-Otieno is the founder and CEO of The Leadership Group Limited.
He holds an honorary Doctor of Business Leadership degree from KCA University, an Executive MBA from ESAMI/Maastricht, and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi.
Martin is an alumnus of the Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program and Fellow of the Institute of Bankers (Kenya). He is also a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya and has attended Executive coaching certifications and training with international coaching federations.
In recognition of his contribution to the private sector in Kenya, Dr Martin Oduor-Otieno was awarded the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) by the Head of State.
