Former Nairobi Women Representative Rachael Shebesh is among the former Members of Parliament (MPs) and politicians shortlisted for the positions of chairperson and member of the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC).
Florence Nyole (Arch.), the Chairperson of the Selection Panel for the Recruitment of Nominees for Appointment, has shortlisted ten candidates for the position of Chairperson and sixteen applicants for the position of one Member of the NGEC.
Shebesh is the only candidate from Nairobi County who has made it to the final stages of the recruitment process.
She joined politics in 2006 and became one of the grassroots mobilizers of Raila Odinga’s ODM Party.
Shebesh Political Career
Her efforts led ODM to nominate her to Parliament in 2008, where she became one of the vocal defenders of Raila, who was serving as Prime Minister.
Shebesh decamped from ODM and joined The National Alliance (TNA), headed by Uhuru Kenyatta, in the 2013 general elections.
She was elected the first Woman Representative in Nairobi City County in 2013 and served until 2017.
Florence Mutua
Former Busia Woman Representative Florence Mutua has also been shortlisted for the position.
She will be among the candidates who will appear before the Selection Committee on October 16th.
Florence Mutua joined the Busia woman representative race in 2013 and won, retaining the seat in 2017.
The two will face the Panel on October 17, 2024, alongside Salome Aluoch Owuonda (Migori), Margaret Lyasi Lesuuda (Laikipia), Juliet Wanjiku Murimi (Kiambu), and Harun Maalim Hassan (Mandera).
Six candidates will be interviewed for the same position on October 16. They include Evans Toto Nyachieng’a (Kisii), Morris Kiwinda Mbondenyi (Taita Taveta), Michael Mbithuka Nzomo (Machakos), Rael Chebichii Lelei (Uasin Gishu), Margaret Kamonya Emonde (Vihiga), and Barako Elema Qatamur (Marsabit).
Additionally, Redempta Kavindu (Makueni), Fredrick Josephat Kibuti Nyagah (Embu), Winrose Chepkoech Rono (Kericho), and Ibtisam Mbarak Awadh (Mombasa) have also been shortlisted.

Position of Chairperson & Interview Dates
Former nominated senator Mary Yiane Seneta, former Isiolo Women Representative Rehema Dida Jaldesa, and former Makueni deputy governor Adelina Mwau have been shortlisted for the position of Chairperson.

The three will be interviewed on October 14 alongside Salome W. Kimata (Kiambu) and Daniel Murgor (Uasin Gishu).
Former Cabinet Minister and Marakwet East MP Linah Jebii Kilimo has also been shortlisted and will be interviewed on October 15th. Kilimo served as MP from 2002 to 2012, Assistant Minister for Cooperative Development in the Kenyan Government (2008-2013), Minister of Immigration (2004-2005), and Minister of State, Office of the President (2003-2004).
Other shortlisted candidates include Bernadette Otiko Muyomi, Halima Ali Omar, Martin Kabubii Mwangi, and Ernest Daniel Alela.
“The shortlisted applicants will be interviewed at the 11th Floor Boardroom, Harambee House, Harambee Avenue, Nairobi, on the date and time indicated in the schedule. Shortlisted applicants should report at the venue at least thirty minutes before the scheduled time,” the Selection Panel said.

Interview Requirements
The shortlisted applicants MUST bring originals of the following:
- National Identity Card.
- Academic and Professional Certificates and Transcripts
- Valid Clearances from the following institutions: Higher Education Loans Board, Kenya Revenue Authority, a registered Credit Reference Bureau, Directorate of Criminal Investigation (Police Clearance) and Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (Duly stamped Self-Declaration Form).
- Letters of recognition of qualifications from the Commission for University Education (CUE) for degrees from foreign universities.
- Recommendation letters or certificates of good standing from the relevant professional bodies and associations (where applicable).
- Any other supporting documents and testimonials.
Members of the public can avail any information relating to any of the shortlisted applicants through sworn affidavits to the Chairperson, NGEC Selection Panel, Harambee House, 11th Floor, Harambee Avenue, Nairobi.
