9 Candidates Shortlisted for SRC Chair Job

The Selection Panel has shortlisted nine candidates for the position of the Chairperson of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

Panel Chairperson Amos Gathecha, stated that the team considered all the applications and shortlisted candidates to appear for interviews.

According to a notice on Monday, September 30, four candidates will be interviewed on October 8, while the other five will appear before the Selection Panel the following day.

On October 8, CHRP (K) Musangi J. Mutua, PhD, from Kitui will be interviewed at 8:30 a.m., followed by James Wahome Ndegwa at 10:00 a.m. Juliana Mwikali Kivasu will appear before the Panel at 11:30 a.m., and Osman Hassan Ibrahim will be interviewed at 2:00 p.m.

The first three interviews on October 9 are as follows: Dr. Rachel Muga Monyoncho at 8:30 a.m., Geoffrey Obonyo at 10:00 a.m., and Abraham Kiptoo Serem at 11:30 a.m.

This will be followed by the interview of Sammy Chepkwony at 2:00 p.m. and Joseph Vincent Onyango at 3:30 p.m.

“The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed at Harambee House, 5th Floor Boardroom, Harambee Avenue, Nairobi, on the date and time indicated on the schedule. Candidates should be at the venue at least thirty (30) minutes before the starting time,” Gathecha said.

SRC Interview Requirements

The Selection Panel stated that candidates must bring originals of the following documents:

  • National Identity Card/Passport.
  • Academic and Professional Certificates and Transcripts.
  • Any other supporting documents and testimonials.
  • Valid clearances from the following bodies: Higher Education Loans Board (HELB); Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA); a registered Credit Reference Bureau; and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (Police Clearance).
  • Self-Declaration Form duly stamped by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
  • Commission for University Education (CUE), where applicable.
  • Recommendation letter from the relevant professional bodies and associations (where applicable).

Public Participation

Members of the public are invited to provide any credible information of interest relating to any of the shortlisted candidates through sworn affidavits to the Chairperson of the Selection Panel or emailed to selectionpanelsrc2024@psyg.go.ke, to be received on or before 5:00 p.m. on October 7, 2024.

The information should be addressed as follows: The Chairperson, Selection Panel for the Nominees for Appointment as Chairperson, Salaries and Remuneration Commission, P.O. Box 30050-00100, Nairobi.

“Canvassing for this position will lead to automatic disqualification. This information is also available in the Kenya Gazette of 30th September 2024,” Gathecha added.

SRC selection panel invited applications from qualified individuals to fill the role, following the impending exit of the current chairperson, Lyn Mengich, who took office in September 2018.

Candidates must hold a degree from a recognized university in Kenya and have at least 10 years of experience in public management, finance and administration, economics, human resource management, or labor laws.

In addition to these professional qualifications, applicants are expected to have a deep understanding of labor market trends in Kenya, specifically income levels in both the private and public sectors.

SRC Functions & Chair Roles

The incoming chairperson will serve a six-year term and play a critical role in guiding the commission, ensuring it fulfills its mandate as outlined in Articles 230(4) and 239 of the Constitution.

Key responsibilities will include chairing meetings, shaping policies, providing strategic direction, and fostering strong relationships with stakeholders and government sectors.

As per Article 230(4) of the Kenyan Constitution, 2010, SRC is mandated to set and regularly review the remuneration and benefits of all State officers.

The Commission also has the power to advise the national and county governments on the remuneration and benefits of all other public officers.
