A church service meant to raise funds for viral content creator Kaluma Boy turned tense on Sunday after a sudden network outage disrupted mobile transactions at JCM Church headquarters along the Eastern Bypass.
Bishop Benson Gathungu Kamau, popularly known as Muthee Kiengei, publicly called out the internet service provider, accusing it of cutting off the connection at a critical moment when Kenyans were donating money to support the ailing father of Kaluma Boy.
“To our network provider, our people at JSM are people of respect and direction. Please, because we want to raise money for this family of Kaluma Boy, restore the network so that we help this family,” Bishop Gathungu said during the October 5 service.
The incident occurred as Kenyans joined the online and physical fundraiser for Kaluma Boy, whose story has moved thousands on social media.
The young content creator gained nationwide attention for documenting how he has been caring for his sick father after he suffered a stroke in August 2024.
Despite the temporary disruption, the fundraiser eventually continued as Kenyans channeled their donation.
Kaluma Boy Awarded Full Scholarship
Moved by his resilience, Kenyans rallied to his aid on September 28, flooding his rural home with donations, food, and emotional support.

During Sunday’s service, Bishop Gathungu and Bishop Muthee Kiengei announced that The East African University (TEAU) had awarded Kaluma Boy a full scholarship to pursue a degree in sales and marketing.
“Dr. Christopher Mutembei, the Vice Chancellor of The East African University, confirmed this morning that Kaluma Boy has been granted a full scholarship. He will study sales and marketing to enhance his digital marketing skills,” Bishop Kiengei said, hailing Kenyans for standing together in compassion.
The Bishop further noted that the overwhelming support shows the power of social media and the kindness of Kenyans from all walks of life.
Kaluma Boy, visibly emotional, thanked the public for the life-changing assistance.
“I thank Kenyans for supporting me. Thank you all very much and may God bless you. On behalf of my family, we are grateful and be blessed,” he said.
A New Beginning for the Family
He revealed that the initial video he posted in July was not intended as a plea for help but rather to share his father’s recovery journey.

“After my father got sick, he went into a coma for three months. It’s been hard for us. The medications are expensive,” he said.
His mother, Beatrice Wangechi, later echoed his gratitude, saying the outpouring of help had restored her faith in humanity.
“I have come to appreciate both the importance of talent and the power of mobile phones in ways I never imagined,” she said.
The East African University, located in Kitengela, Kajiado County, is a fully chartered private institution accredited by the Commission for University Education (CUE).
