Kenya’s transition from the old red booklet licence to the digital smart card driving licence is now fully integrated into the eCitizen platform.

The upgrade enhances security, simplifies verification, and ensures compliance with modern transport regulations.

Below is a detailed guide on how motorists can apply for the new licence through eCitizen.

The smart card driving licence offers several advantages over the previous paper version.

It is more durable, features embedded security technology to curb forgery, and allow traffic officers to verify information electronically.

For motorists, it means easier compliance and a modern form of identification recognised across the country.

Applying through eCitizen is designed to be straightforward, provided applicants follow each step carefully and ensure accurate personal information

Step-by-step process for applying for a smart driving licence

The process begins by creating or logging into an eCitizen account at www.ecitizen.go.ke using a national ID number and a valid email address.

Applicants who already have accounts can simply sign in and proceed to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) section.

Under this category, select Smart Driving Licence (Smart DL) to initiate the application.

Once inside the NTSA portal, applicants are required to confirm personal details, including name, ID number, and current licence information.

It is important to ensure that the details match those on the physical driving licence and the national ID to avoid delays.

After verification, choose the option Apply for Smart Driving Licence. The system will display the application fee, which is currently KSh 3,050.

Payment can be made conveniently using M-Pesa, debit or credit cards, or other mobile money platforms integrated into eCitizen.

After making the payment, applicants must book an appointment for biometric enrolment.

The portal provides a calendar showing available dates and NTSA service centres across the country.

Applicants should select the most convenient centre and print the booking slip or save a digital copy for presentation on the appointment day.

Biometric process

During the biometric appointment, NTSA officers capture fingerprints, take a digital passport photo, and collect a signature.

This data is embedded in the smart card’s electronic chip, ensuring authenticity and preventing duplication.

Applicants must carry their original national ID and their current driving licence to the appointment for verification.

Once the biometric process is complete, the smart card DL is produced and typically becomes ready for collection within two to three weeks, though processing times may vary by location and workload.

Applicants receive an SMS or email notification when the card is ready. Collection is done at the chosen NTSA centre, where the applicant signs to confirm receipt.
