After Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted to remove their Speaker on Thursday, October 24, Nyamira County has declared the position vacant.

The County Assembly Speaker, Enock Okero, was impeached just two years after assuming the role.

In a notice on Friday, October 25, the Clerk of Nyamira County Assembly invited interested candidates to apply for the vacancy.

“Article 178 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 as read together with Section 9 A (1) of the County Government Act, 2012 provides that each County Assembly shall have a Speaker who shall be elected by that County Assembly in accordance with the Standing Orders, from among persons who are qualified to be elected as members of County Assembly but are not such members” read part of the notice.

“In light of the above, interested people who qualify for the position are therefore invited to submit their nomination papers for election to the Office of Speaker of the County Assembly of Nyamira.”

Further to the above, a person who wishes to participate in the election must be nominated by two (2) Members of the Nyamira County Assembly.

The clerk also noted that shortlisted candidates shall be notified of the day and time for election of the Speaker.

Why the Speaker Was Impeached

The 23 out of 34 MCAs present during the session unanimously passed the motion to impeach the Speaker, citing allegations of violating the Constitution of Kenya.

Nyamira County Assembly goes into the devolution history books as the first legislative unit to have sent home two speakers in a span of less than 10 years.

Okero becomes the second speaker to be shown the door after the first assembly impeached pioneer Nyamira County Speaker Peter King’oina.
