Tanzanian Vice President Emmanuel John Nchimbi has resigned from his position.

In a letter dated Tuesday, August 25, and addressed to President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s office, Emmanuel Nchimbi said he had formally tendered his resignation.

Nchimbi also announced that he would retire from the country’s public service effective September 4, 2026.

The former Vice President also cited constitutional provisions under Article 50(2)(c) read together with Article 149(2) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania.

“Today, 25 August 2026, I wrote a letter to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, informing her that I have decided to retire from politics and public service,” he wrote.

“Accordingly, I will resign from the position of Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, pursuant to Article 50(2)(c), read together with Article 149(2) of the Constitution, effective 4 September 2026.”

In the letter, Nchimbi recalled the commitment he made to President Samia Suluhu Hassan on August 27, 2025, when he assumed office as Vice President, saying he had pledged to serve with integrity and step aside when the need for change arose.

“I also assured her that if at any time she felt she needed another Vice President, I would relinquish this position. I have become convinced beyond doubt that the President desires change, and I have therefore decided to honour my promise,” he added.

He went on to express his gratitude to the country’s Head of State and the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), for their confidence in his leadership.

“I also take this opportunity to thank all Tanzanians for the tremendous cooperation you gave me throughout my time in public service. I assure you that I will continue to be a good citizen of Tanzania,” he concluded.

Emmanuel Nchimbi: From Songea MP to Tanzania’s Vice President

Dr Emmanuel John Nchimbi, who has resigned as Tanzania’s Vice President, has had a long career in politics and public service spanning more than two decades.

Early Life and Education

Born on December 24, 1971, in Mbeya Region, Nchimbi was raised in a family with a strong public service background.

His father, Mzee John Nchimbi, was an Assistant Commissioner of Police and served as Regional Police Commander in Mtwara after coming from Songea District. He was also involved in politics, serving as a CCM National Executive Committee member through the armed forces wing before becoming a CCM regional secretary.

Nchimbi began his education at Oysterbay Primary School in Dar es Salaam, where he studied between 1980 and 1986. He later attended Uru Secondary School and Sangu Secondary School, completing his O-Level education in 1990.

He proceeded to Forest Hill Secondary School in Mbeya for his A-Level studies, completing them in 1993.

Nchimbi later joined the Institute of Development Management (IDM) Mzumbe, where he obtained an Advanced Diploma in Administration between 1994 and 1997.

Political Career and Rise to Government

Nchimbi’s political career gained momentum after he was elected to the CCM National Executive Committee. In 1998, he became chairman of the party’s youth wing, Umoja wa Vijana wa Chama Cha Mapinduzi (UVCCM).

He also worked at the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) from 1998 to 2003. During that period, he pursued a Master of Business Administration in Banking and Finance at Mzumbe University.

In 2003, he was appointed District Commissioner for Bunda, serving until 2005. He later completed a PhD at Mzumbe University between 2008 and 2011.

Nchimbi entered Parliament in the 2005 General Election after winning the Songea Town seat on a CCM ticket. He secured 67.6 per cent of the vote against CHADEMA candidate Edson Mbogoro, who received 30.5 per cent.

In January 2006, then-President Jakaya Kikwete appointed him Deputy Minister for Information, Culture and Sports. He was later moved to the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Youth Development before serving as Deputy Minister for Defence and National Service.

Nchimbi retained his Songea Town seat in the 2010 General Election, defeating Mbogoro again after securing 59.9 per cent of the vote.

He was subsequently elevated to Cabinet, serving as Minister for Information, Culture and Sports before being appointed Minister for Home Affairs in May 2012.
