The Jubilee Party, led by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, has announced it will not field a candidate in the upcoming Mbeere North by-election scheduled for November 27, 2025.
In a statement issued on Friday, September 12, the party’s Deputy Organizing Secretary, Pauline Njoroge, confirmed that Jubilee will instead rally behind the opposition’s joint candidate.
She dismissed claims that Jubilee was preparing to sponsor its own aspirant, stressing that the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) has not issued nomination papers to anyone in the contest.
“As the Deputy Organizing Secretary of the Jubilee Party, I wish to set the record straight. The National Executive Council (NEC), which is chaired by H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, has not issued nomination papers to any aspirant for the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election,” Pauline Njoroge said.
“The Jubilee Party will not be fielding a candidate in this race. Instead, we will stand firmly behind the joint opposition candidate. Take this to the bank and treat all other claims as pure hearsay.”

Uhuru’s Jubilee to Endorse Opposition Candidate
The Mbeere North parliamentary seat fell vacant after its former representative, Geoffrey Ruku, was appointed Public Service Cabinet Secretary, replacing Justin Muturi, who was dismissed from the Cabinet on March 26, 2025.
The Jubilee Party has convened a Special National Delegates Conference (NDC) scheduled for September 26, 2025, at the Jockey Club, Ngong Racecourse. The meeting is expected to resolve questions around the party’s leadership and streamline the party’s strategic direction as the former ruling party positions itself for the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, on August 5, 2025, the former president chaired the party’s first NEC meeting since a High Court ruling restored his leadership, with the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) affirming the decision. That meeting reviewed party affairs and mapped out strategies to strengthen grassroots structures.

Gachagua’s DCP Pulls Out of Mbeere Contention
The clarification comes days after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s party, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), pulled out of the Mbeere North by-election.
Gachagua, speaking after chairing the party’s NEC meeting in Nairobi on Wednesday, September 9, said the DCP will instead endorse Justin Muturi’s Democratic Party (DP) candidate in the November 27 polls.
The former deputy president stated that the move was in line with the party’s commitment to opposition unity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He also acknowledged that the seat had previously been held by the Democratic Party and, in his view, should rightfully remain with the party’s candidate to complete a full term.
According to Gachagua, the decision was also based on recognition of Justin Muturi’s leadership credentials.
“DCP has agreed to support the Democratic Party candidate and step down our candidate on the DCP ticket,” he added.
“We shall therefore support the Democratic Party candidate and ask our members in Mbeere North to support that candidate from the Democratic Party.”
