The government of Ukraine has started a series of drone attacks in Siberia, a vast area in Russia.
Reuters reports that on Sunday, June 6, 2025, Ukraine targeted Russian nuclear-capable long-range bombers at a military base in Siberia. This attack occurred more than 4,300 km (2,670 miles) from the front lines.
Additionally, there was a Ukrainian drone attack in the Murmansk region of northern Russia. This region includes the Olenya airbase, which also supports strategic aviation.
Several unverified videos and photos circulating on social media showed Russian strategic bombers on fire at the Belaya airbase, north of Irkutsk. The Belaya airbase is an important site for the Russian Aerospace Forces’ Long-Range Aviation.
Ukraine Launches Drone Attacks in Siberia
The information about the drone attacks directed at Russia was confirmed by a Ukrainian intelligence official in Kyiv, who, according to Reuters, stated that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) launched a major drone attack on over 40 Russian military aircraft.
He noted that the attack targeted Tu-95 and Tu-22 strategic bombers, which Russia uses to launch long-range missiles at Ukraine.

A governor in Russia, Igor Kobzev, the governor of Irkutsk, confirmed a drone attack on a military unit near the village of Sredny in the Usolsky district but downplayed information regarding strategic aviation.
He noted that this was the first such attack in that part of Siberia, but the number of drones involved was not clear. He said the drones were launched from a truck.
Drone attacks in Siberia are happening while Russia and Ukraine are trying to negotiate peace. The second round of peace talks in Istanbul on June 2 did not result in a ceasefire agreement.
Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks
Both countries agreed to swap 1,200 prisoners and exchange 6,000 bodies of fallen soldiers, but they did not set a timeline. Russia presented demands that Ukraine and its allies do not accept, including no NATO expansion to the east and lifting sanctions. Ukraine insists on a full, unconditional ceasefire.
U.S. President Donald Trump has been involved in talks, speaking with Vladimir Putin. He expressed frustration over Russia’s increasing attacks. Trump warned Putin against retaliating after the drone strikes and has considered new sanctions but is cautious, fearing they might ruin peace talks.

Trump’s envoy, Keith Kellogg, said that the UK, Germany, and France will join the next talks to try to combine Russian and Ukrainian peace proposals.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called Russia’s actions “pure terrorism” after the attacks in Kharkiv and urged allies not to show “weakness” to Putin. He suggested a ceasefire until a meeting with Putin can be set up but stressed that Russia’s demands threaten Ukraine’s sovereignty.
