The death of Daniel Muthiani, a popular blogger based in Meru County has sparked outrage among the community and fellow activists with Robert Alai questioning the freedom of speech rights.
Many are demanding a thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind his demise and bring those responsible to book.
Likewise, the Kenya’s Bloggers Association led by the Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly and Blogger Robert Alai has issued a statement on Daniel’s alias Sniper death raising eyebrows on the tragic disappearance that led to his death.
“We the bloggers in Kenya are deeply shocked and outraged by the brutal kidnapping and murder of meru based blogger Daniel Muthiani,” read the statement.

Similarly, the bloggers called for investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), together with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

“We urgently call upon the Directorate of Criminal Investigations along with the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution to launch an immediate thorough investigation into the henious act,” stated Alai.
Notably, the Meru-based blogger Daniel Muthiani was found dead on December 17, 2023 after disappearing for three weeks.
Murdered After Disappearance
Abogeta West Member of County Assembly, Denis Kiogora, confirmed the disheartening news of Sniper, while expressing condolences and emphasizing the need for justice.

“He was found dead on Saturday, December 16. Let his soul rest in power. May his killers never know peace,” said Mr Kiogora, who also serves as the Chief Whip in the Meru County Assembly.
According to reports, the deceased was set to meet with Meru County Leadership on Saturday, December 2, 2023, when he was reported missing.
Muthiani allegedly received a call on the day of his disappearance from a well-known acquaintance who wanted him to meet a politician.
However, he only confirmed his arrival at the destination to his wife, marking the last conversation between the couple.

Since then, his phone was switched off and no information of his whereabouts was forthcoming until December 17 when he was found dead.

Meanwhile, the Meru-based blogger was widely known for his bold stance on various social and political issues however the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and subsequent demise remain unclear.
On the other hand, activists and blogger Robert Alai castigated public officials and leaders who have publicly threatened bloggers.
According to the bloggers, a section of Isiolo leaders have created a difficult environment for bloggers to exercise their fundamental rights of freedom of speech.
“This tragic event occurs in a disturbing context where Isiolo county leaders who have publicly threatened bloggers, such environments are not only hostile to free speech but also dangerous to those who dare exercise this fundamental right,” read the statement.
