US Embassy Issues Warning to Americans in Kenya Ahead of Protests

The United States (US) Embassy has issued a warning for its citizens in Kenya over continued protests being held across the country. 

In a statement, the Embassy noted that demonstrations have continues especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays in multiple cities including the Central Business District of Nairobi. 

Further, the alert has warned that the protests are also taking place near government buildings, adding that roads across the country may also be blocked. 

At the same time, US Citizens in Kenya have been warned that although protests in Kenya may seem peaceful, they can become violent any time with police officers using live ammunitions in some instances.

They have also been warned that police officers have in the past used tear gas and water cannons and therefore turning the protests dangerous. 

“Even protests that seem peaceful may turn violent at any moment. In previous protests, police have used water cannon, tear gas, and in some cases, live ammunition in response. 

“Police check points and traffic disruption are expected,” the statement from the embassy read in part.

Therefore, Americans in Kenya have been advised to monitor local media for updates on highway and road conditions before planning any travels in the country. 

In addition, they have been advised to avoid crowds and keep their doors locked and windows rolled up while inside a vehicle. 

The US Embassy has also asked them to notify their friends and family of their whereabouts and safety as well as review their personal security plans. 

“Carry a copy of your U.S passport with current Kenyan Visa,” added the statement. 

The warning came ahead of planned Gen Z protests on Tuesday, July 23, where they organized a march towards the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, CBD and other areas in the country.

KAA and Kenya Airways Issue Travel Advisory

Earlier, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and Kenya Airways issued an alert advising travelers to arrive early at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to avoid any delays in catching their flights.

Kenya Airways asked customers to get to the airport four hours earlier to avoid potential delays.

On the other hand, KAA noted that they have heightened security checks and protocols at the airport, further calling on the passengers to contact their respective airline for the latest flight information.

“Due to heightened security checks & protocols at JKIA, passengers are advised to arrive at the airport early to avoid any potential delays in catching their flights. Kindly contact your respective airline for the latest flight information. Safe travels!” read the notice from KAA.
