A Chuka family has shared disturbing claims about their daughter, Virginia Gacheri, and how she lived in Qatar before her death, including allegations of mistreatment and poor living conditions.

Speaking to local media, Gacheri’s parents and siblings say she fled a household where she had been working after allegedly experiencing torture and threats to her life.

“Virginia Gacheri had been supporting the family since she secured the job. However, her challenges began about a year ago when, according to the family, she fled a household where she had been working following alleged torture and threats to her life,” the report confirmed.

They also allege that her hands were exposed to acid, causing severe burns, and that she was at times denied adequate food.

Her mother recalls Virginia Gacheri telling her that she survived on leftovers from the plates of members of the household because she was allegedly not allowed to eat the food in the house.

One of the last TikTok videos posted by the late Virginia Gacheri captured her pleading with God for strength, saying, “God, your child is tired. Remember your promises, please…”

Virginia Gacheri and Her Struggles in Qatar

Gacheri moved to Qatar in 2022 and, according to her parents, supported her family in Kiamuriuki, Chuka.

After leaving the household, she reportedly began searching for another job. Her family says her expired contract made it difficult to secure new employment and obtain the necessary migration documents.

The family says Gacheri and other women were staying at a facility while searching for employment when she collapsed shortly after leaving a washroom, and confirmed that they received news of her death on September 4.

Virginia Gacheri leaves behind children, including a son studying at Meru National Polytechnic and a daughter in Grade Four.

The family is appealing to well-wishers, leaders, and people of goodwill to help raise about Sh1 million needed to repatriate Gacheri’s body.

They say the funds will also help meet burial expenses and allow the family to bring her home for a dignified send-off.

Alphayo Mogunde said he felt the family’s pain and called on the Kenyan Embassy in Qatar to intervene and help Kenyans facing alleged mistreatment abroad.

” The Kenyan Embassy in Qatar should intervene and help the Kenyans who are being mistreated by the Arabs in the Emirates countries.”

Margaret Lugo also shared a message of hope, saying, “God of mercy will open doors.”

Pasaka Kim Roberto raised concerns about the process of Kenyans seeking employment in Arab countries, describing the process as being treated like a business

“Saad, indeed, bearing in mind that the process from Kenya to Arab countries is all about deals; it is just like business.”
