Tana River Senator Danson has confirmed the death of his 8-year-old daughter after years of health struggles, with the deceased identified as Amal Mghoi.

In a family statement on September 13, 2026, Mungatana said Amal died while undergoing treatment at Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital in Muthaiga.

“It is with profound sorrow that the family of Hon. Senator Dr. Danson Mungatana and his wife, Hon. Mwanaisha Chidzuga, Deputy Government Spokesperson, announce the passing of their last-born daughter, Amal Mghoi Mungatana,’ the family statement read.

Senator Danson Mungatana Confirms Years of Health Struggles

In the statement shared by Senator Danson Mungatana, the family said his daughter had struggled with her health since she was born and had received treatment both in Kenya and abroad.

He described Amal as a source of smiles and love for the family whenever she was doing well.

“Amal had struggled with her health since she was born 8 years ago, and received treatment both in Kenya and abroad. We thank God for the wonderful smiles and love that she brought to the whole family whenever she was doing well.”

The family is gathered at their home in Ngao Village as funeral arrangements continue. Amal is scheduled to be buried on Friday, September 18, 2026, in Ngao Village.

Danson Mungatana Background

Danson Mungatana is a Kenyan lawyer and politician who has served as the Tana River Senator since 2022. He previously represented Garsen Constituency in Parliament from 2002 to 2013.

Mungatana was first elected as a Garsen MP in 2002 and was re-elected in 2007. During his time in Parliament, he served as an assistant minister in several ministries, including Medical Services, Lands, Foreign Affairs and Internal Security.

After leaving Parliament, he served as chairman of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) from 2013 to 2014 and later became a commissioner at the COMESA Competition Commission.

Mungatana returned to elective politics in 2022, winning the Tana River Senate seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

In the Senate, he has chaired the Ad-Hoc Committee investigating the Shakahola tragedy and serves on the Committees on Energy and Delegated Legislation.

He is also a lawyer and founded Mungatana & Co. Advocates after being admitted to the Kenyan Bar in 1996.

Who is Mungatana’s Wife and Family

Mwanaisha Chidzuga is a former Swahili news anchor who currently serves as Deputy Government Spokesperson. President William Ruto appointed her to the position in October 2023.

Chidzuga was born and raised in Matuga Sub-County, Kwale County. She attended Ziwani Primary School before joining Kenya High School in Nairobi.

Further, she is married to Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana, and the couple has four children. She has also expressed interest in contesting the Kwale County Woman Representative seat in the 2027 General Election.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Communications and Public Relations from Moi University and a master’s degree in the same field.

She began her media career at Pwani FM as a Swahili reporter before working for several media organizations, including KBC, BBC Swahili, KTN, K24, and Radio 47. She became known for anchoring Swahili news and hosting television programs.

Chidzuga later moved into government communications and was appointed Deputy Government Spokesperson on October 4, 2023. Her role includes communicating government policies, programs, and responses to the public, including through Swahili-language outreach.

She has also been involved in politics and business. In 2021, she contested the Matuga parliamentary seat on a UDA ticket but was unsuccessful.
