Police have arrested a wanted gang leader linked to the death of a police officer escorting examination papers to Mahero Secondary School in Siaya County in November.
According to the Directorate of Criminal investigation – DCI, the suspect has been a wanted criminal gang member and had been on the run.
The suspect, a 25-year-old, was according to the DCI, linked to the hacking a police man in company of his colleague to death and taking off with his riffle.

Likewise, the man identified as Omondi Odipo alias Martin Umar is also linked to stealing a riffle from the other policewoman who were on examination duties.
“Omondi Odipo linked to an incident where a police officer was stabbed to death and robbed off his riffle and that of a colleague as they escorted examination papers to Mahero secondary school in Alego Usonga Sub County,” said DCI.

Omondi was arrested in Usenge Bondo where according to the detectives, he had been hiding after committing the heinous act.
“DCI hasted Omondi in Usenge Village within Bondo area of Siaya County where he was hiding after committing the crime,” said DCI.
Events that led to police murder
Notably, according to the DCI, the incident took place at the heights of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education on of November 20, 2023.
Similarly, the police had earlier published photos of Omondi and his associates, asking the public to give information on their whereabouts.
According to the DCI, other suspects linked to the police officers murder included Edwin Omondi alias Rashid,Simon Ochieng Ouma alias Ali Baba,Salim Jackoyo and Edward Wanyama.
At the time of the incident, police reported that the gang grabbed the two weapons- an AK47 rifle with 30 bullets and an MP5 with 30 bullets and escaped on foot.
According to police reports while citing witnesses, one of the attackers wore an Arafat shawl while the other had a face mask on him.

They stabbed constable Edwin Erocho in the neck, face and chest killing him while his female colleague managed to escape into a bush but after being robbed of her rifle and with injuries.
Unfortunately, the victim died on the spot following injuries in the chest, neck and face while attackers escaped on a motorcycle that was near there.
However, at the time, two knives and a black dust coat were recovered at the scene of the murder.
The suspect is now being held at Lwala Kotieno Police Station awaiting arraignment.
