Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was on Monday, July 24 charged with possession of weapons after police raided his home.
While appearing at the Makardara Law Courts, the prosecution stated that 14 machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus, and 3 plows were recovered at his Kiserian home.
They further claimed the weapons may have been intended to be used to commit a felony.
Maina Njenga Produced in Court
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s Communications Director Philip Etale had earlier reported that Njenga was awaiting his arraignment at the cells within the court premises.
“Mr. Maina Njenga is set to appear before the Judge at the Makadara Law Courts. He is presently awaiting the arraignment in the court at the cells within the court precincts,” Etale’s statement read.
Maina Njenga’s whereabouts remained unknown since his arrest last week on Wednesday, July 19.
Police arrested him alongside his brother and his aide while at his home in Oloosurutia area, Kajiado North.

As a result, Kenyans online and Njenga’s family demanded to know of his whereabouts, asking why he had not been arraigned in court since he was arrested last week.
Maina Njenga Family Demands for his Release
His family and close associates demanded to know his whereabouts, blaming the government for unlawful arrests and detention.
Maina’s father Mr. Stephen Kamonye, explained that officers in civilian clothes with four cars forced their way into their residential home at around 8.30 pm on Wednesday before arresting him.
He further claimed that the officers also injured people who work on their farm during the arrest.
Moreover, after his arrest, Maina Njenga’s lawyer Ndegwa Njiru in a statement reported that police took away his client without disclosing the reasons or the charges he was facing.
According to the lawyer, the trio were driven away to an undisclosed location.
Likewise, the ex-mungiki leader’s arrest came after Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga’s aides and political allies were arrested/abducted on Wednesday, July 19 before the anti-government protests began.
Other leaders who were arrested following the protests included Embakasi MP Babu Owino, Raila’s bodyguard Maurice Ogeta, his spokesperson Dennis Onyango, Makadara MP George Aladwa, Kilifi MP Ken Chonga, digital strategist Pauline Njoroge and several MCAs.
Nonetheless, Mathare MP Antony Oluoch and Majority leader in the Nairobi County assembly Peter Imwatok have also been arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts.
