Fresh details have revealed that the woman who was shot dead by a police officer in Kanyonyoo, Kitui County, was a married mother of two.
According to her family, she left her home claiming she was heading to work in Kitengela.
The family of the woman said that they were searching for answers surrounding the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of her (Joy) and her friend, Jane.
Joy was married to James, and together they had two children, a Form Three student and a Grade Six pupil.

Her husband and children, who were left in Machakos, expressed their shock and pain over the matter.
Joy’s husband and family said that they are struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss and the painful circumstances surrounding it.
“We have never had any problems with her. We don’t understand how things ended up like this, or why this officer killed my son’s wife,” Waema, the mother-in-law, added.
Witnesses at the scene said that the officer fired multiple rounds before fleeing the scene.
He is said to have abandoned his rifle in a nearby bush, and authorities are making an effort to track him down.

In Laws Defend her Honor
Further, while speaking to the press, her in-laws described her as a devoted wife and mother who had left their Machakos home, saying she was heading to Kitengela to look for a job.
However, she had instead travelled to Kanyonyoo, allegedly to meet her suspected lover, the police officer who is the main suspect of the murder.
The officer tracked Joy down to her friend Jane Ndanu’s house, where she had been staying the night.
During their meeting with the officer, an argument broke out and escalated into violence. The police officer opened fire using his AK-47 rifle, killing both Joy and Jane on the spot.
‘The officer wanted to beat up Joy, but her friend was trying to protect her. So he killed them both,” said Stanley, a witness.
Moreover, Joy’s father-in-law, Jonathan, expressed his pain over the incident, questioning the officer’s actions and training.
“She was shot so many times, we don’t even understand it. What kind of training did he get to do something like that?” Joy’s father-in-law added.
