With the rainy season here, it is important to dress appropriately and stylishly. You should not only consider the aspect of staying dry but also dress well and comfortably for each chilly rainy day.

However, it may sometimes be challenging to look stylish while staying warm and protected from the rain and all it comes with.

The weather in Kenya can sometimes be unpredictable. It may rain in the morning, have extreme sunshine by midday and be cloudy in the evening.

As such, some stylists recommend wearing clothes you can comfortably take off without staying naked or indecent when it gets too hot or carry some to add on top should it get too cold.

In this article, we shall explore 8 tips for dressing appropriately and stylishly during the rainy season. Some of these tips include effective layering and accessorizing well to stay stylish while also protecting yourself from the chilly weather.

Dress in Layers

It is advisable to put on several layers of clothing to trap warm air in between them during the chilly rainy season. Inside, wear a moisture-wicking fabric to keep sweat away from your skin.

Consider having a middle layer of insulation like fleece, or wool then complete the look with a waterproof outer layer to protect you from the rain.

Ensure the outer layer of clothing is a lightweight waterproof jacket or coat. have it on over a stylish sweater or sweatshirt, and pair with waterproof pants or jeans to keep you warm and dry.

As such do not be afraid to experiment with layering with different textures, lengths, and prints.

Adding a trendy hat or scarf to your rainy-day outfit can instantly elevate your style while also keeping you warm.

Look for waterproof materials or wear a cute, printed bandana to keep your hair dry and add some personality and life to your look.

Tighten Up

Rainy season comes with chilly weather; therefore, it is advisable to dress in attires that hugs your skin. This may be tight jeans, cotton dresses, cashmere sweaters, and ponchos for casual wear.

Likewise, having a trench coat on especially for official wear will keep you both warm and classy.

To accessorize, you may consider wearing mittens, scarves, and other things to keep you from freezing.

Have Versatile Footwear

Waterproof shoes or boots that can be dressed up or down are a great investment during the rainy season.

Look for boots in neutral colors such as black or brown, which can easily be paired with different outfits.

Likewise, ensure you have at least one thigh-high, knee-high, and ankle-high boot. Boots have a way of keeping the feet warm as they protect your feet from mud and water that piles in some of our Kenyan roads.

Buckling them up high not only adds a sense of style to your outfit but also keeps you warm throughout the chilly days.

Invest in Stylish Rain Gear

Having an excellent quality raincoat, boots and an umbrella that complements your style will not only keep you dry but also have you turning heads in the rain.

Try more bright colors and patterns to brighten up a gloomy rainy day. Moreover, experiment with assorted colors and prints as they help you stand out in a sea of dowdy rain gear.

Keep Your Feet Warm with Socks

Sometimes we get cold from walking on the floor with bare feet. Wearing warm socks or slippers will help keep away from the cold.

Moreover, it is advisable to put on socks made from wool or fleece materials.

Invest in Water-Resistant Clothing

Since you cannot control the rain, you can control how it affects your clothes.

Therefore, it is safer to invest in waterproof or water-resistant clothing including raincoats, jackets, or boots, to help you stay dry and look stylish at the same time.

Use a Heated Blanket

Heated blankets are usually a cozy and comforting way to stay warm during cold and rainy days.

For those days that you have light clothing on, and you are indoors, covering yourself with a heated blanket is the way to go.

  • Take Warm Beverages
  • Have protective hairstyles like braids to keep your neck and shoulders warm.
  • Avoid wearing delicate and light fabrics such as silk, chiffon, and satin but if you must, then ensure you layer it with heavy clothing.
  • Avoid short clothes as they expose you to the chilly weather
  • Avoid accessorizing with metallic ornaments to help keep the cold out
  • Avoid extra-long dresses to prevent carrying mud around
  • Avoid wearing open shoes

Conclusively, dressing stylishly for the rainy season does not have to be a challenge. With the right pieces and accessories, you can stay fashionable and dry, no matter the weather.

Invest in high-quality, waterproof footwear, layer up with lightweight fabrics, and accessorize with rain-friendly pieces like hats, gloves, and scarves.

Furthermore, do not fear embracing bright colors and playful prints to add some fun to a drab day. With the tips above in mind, you will be able to look your best, even on the rainiest of days.
