Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino criticised Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja following allegations that goons were hired to disrupt ongoing protests in the city.
In a statement issued Saturday, June 21, Babu Owino accused the county leadership of using violence to suppress dissent, describing it as a betrayal of public trust.
“Governor Sakaja, Nairobi did not elect you to unleash goons on its people. You promised leadership. You spoke of change. But what we’re seeing is betrayal,” said Babu Owino.
The legislator claimed that hawkers and youth involved in the protests were being harassed and beaten by hired groups allegedly acting under county instructions.
Babu Owino addresses Sakaja
“Vendors are being harassed. Youths are being beaten. Voices of dissent are being silenced not with facts, but with fists. Is this the ‘new Nairobi’ you promised?” he asked.
Owino warned that the continued use of force against demonstrators would backfire, noting that residents were becoming more aware and assertive.
“You were elected to fix broken systems, not to break the people. You were given power to serve, not to suppress,” he stated.
The MP further accused Sakaja’s administration of ruling through fear and intimidation instead of offering responsible leadership.
“Every time your administration sends goons to intimidate the people, you remind us: You are not leading. You are ruling through fear. But here’s what you forget, Nairobians are watching. They are not fools. And they are not afraid,” he said.
He urged the county boss to prioritise public service, accountability, and citizen welfare over public relations.
Public reactions
“Real leadership is not loud music and PR stunts. It’s a service. It’s humility. It’s protecting your people, not attacking them,” said Owino.
This sparked online reactions as many citizens expressed their frustrations and disappointments.
Sakawa Otenyo, a citizen, questioned why some citizens would allow themselves to be used and advised them to keep off if they are not interested in the protests.

“Once you allow yourself to be used like a condom, expect to be thrown away after us. That is a message to the goon: if you aren’t happy with the demonstration, go home,” he said.
The goon’s incident
This comes after the goons infiltrated the protestors in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) during the protests, causing chaos and damage.
The suspected goons violently disrupted peaceful demonstrations in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday, June 17, turning a protest seeking justice for blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody, into chaos.
