Gatonye Wa Mbugua is a veteran Kenyan radio presenter and media executive known for his work at Kameme FM.

The presenter started his career in the early 2010s as a program presenter at Kameme FM, where he earned KSh 600 weekly pay.

Gatonye, in his interviews, has also explained that his interest in becoming an anchor stemmed from his ability to tell stories.

His career began after he met a Kameme FM executive at the club, who invited him to interview.

“At the club, the senior manager heard my voice and saw my potential and requested I go for an interview,” Gatonye Wa Mbugua explained during an interview with presenter John Kamau.

Early Life and Education

Paul James Gatonye Wa Mbugua was born on June 5, 1974, in Ndeiya Kikuyu town in Kiambu County.

According to Gatonye, he grew up following the teachings of the catholic religion and has maintained his religion to date.

During his baptism, he was named Paul, and later James, following the catholic religion teachings.

After completing his higher learning education, Gatonye ventured into the acting career at the Kenya National Theatre.

As an actor, he featured in cinemas with Ken Wakuraya, who is currently a renowned news anchor and TV personality, and Jeff Gathemba, a radio presenter and MC.

His most popular film was titled ‘The Race,’ released in 2008.

Gatonye Wa Mbugua Career

In 2007, Gatonye Wa Mbugua was hired at Kameme Radio to present business news, receiving a monthly salary of KSh 2,400.

Later, Gatonye moved from the radio and started selling alcohol, and during his work as an alcohol seller, a senior manager at Kameme saw potential in him.

The senior manager requested that Gatonye present himself at the station for assessment as a radio presenter.

A popular presenter at the station was tasked with the assessment, and according to Gatonye, the feedback was negative.

“During the interview, the presenter, who is well known, but I won’t say the name, told me that my voice was bad and nobody would desire to hear it on the radio,” Gatonye stated during an interview with presenter John Kamau.

Following the presenter’s disapproval, Gatonye did not get the job, and at the time he was accompanied by a popular sports presenter, Jeremiah Kimani, well known as Referee Mwenyewe.

In a twist of events, the senior Kameme FM official ordered that Gatonye be given a chance to work as a presenter in 2008 despite the disapproval of the interviewer, and from then on, his presenting gained attention.

Before his employment in 2006, Njogu Wa Njoroge had retired from working at the radio station and started working at Inooro FM.

Following the departure of Njogu Wa Njoroge, under the management of Rose Gimotho took over the Arahuka program.

In 2010, Kameme FM underwent a management change, with Rose selling the station to the Kenyatta family, and the presenter’s salary increased.

During his co-hosting of the late-night show Ma-Watchmen with Muthee Kiengei and Kihenjo at 9:00, his popularity increased.

At one point, comedians Kihenjo and Gatonye were fired from the radio station, and the two took advantage of a pastor who paid them to be featured at the station without knowing they had been fired.

In 2016, Gatonye took the place of Njogu wa Njoroge, who moved to Gukena FM and later worked with Man Nyari and Muthee Kiengei wa Watoria, with whom they still work.

Further, the presenter was awarded the Head of State Commendation (HSC) by the former president, Uhuru Kenyatta.
