Johana Kiplangat Tonui is a senior officer in the National Police Service of Kenya, holding the rank of Assistant Inspector General (AIG).
On 10 June 2026, Inspector General Douglas Kanja appointed him as the new Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU).
He takes over from the outgoing Commandant, Ranson Lolmodooni, who has held the position since July 12, 2024.
Tonui will work closely with the new Deputy Commandant, General Service Unit (GSU) Fredrick Egesa Nyongesa.

As Commandant of the GSU, Tonui will oversee operations involving counterterrorism, high-risk security interventions, protection of key national installations, and support to other security agencies during emergencies.
The unit also plays a key role in maintaining public order during major national events and responding to emerging security threats across the country.
Tonui is expected to steer ongoing reforms and strengthen operational readiness within the elite unit.
Career Background
Before his appointment, Tonui served in the Directorate of Operations within the Kenya Police Service.
He has also served as Director of Wildlife Security at the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
Throughout his career, he has risen through the ranks, serving in various operational and leadership roles within the police service.
Tonui has been awarded the Head of State’s Commendation (HSC) in recognition of his service.

Education and Research
Tonui holds a Master of Arts in Leadership and Security Management from Kenyatta University.
His academic research has focused on policing and organizational performance, including a thesis titled “Participatory Supervision and its Influence on Work Performance in the Kenya Police Service: The Case of Machakos County (2010–2017).”
His work explores police leadership, organizational culture, and performance within law enforcement institutions.

- Conduct a similar study across the entire National Police Service to establish broader evidence on the relationship between participatory supervision and work performance.

- Explore how participatory supervision can be integrated into policy formulation at the early stages of development within security institutions.
