The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has congratulated Dr. Francis Njoroge Kuria following his promotion to the rank of Major General in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and appointment as Director of Medical Services.
In a statement on June 9, KMPDC recognized Dr. Kuria as a registered medical practitioner and general surgeon with a career spanning more than three decades in clinical practice, medical leadership, public health, and public service.
The council said Dr. Kuria’s promotion shows his many years of service in both civilian and military healthcare, adding that it is a proud moment for the medical sector and an encouragement to other health workers, especially those serving in the military.
MPDC said it is confident that Dr. Kuria is well suited for the role, noting that his leadership is expected to strengthen healthcare services within the Kenya Defence Forces and beyond.
Major General (Dr.) Francis Njoroge Kuria is a senior military medical officer, general surgeon, and public health expert with more than 30 years of experience in clinical practice, leadership, and public service.
“KMPDC wishes Major General (Dr.) Kuria every success as he assumes his new responsibilities and looks forward to his continued contribution to strengthening healthcare services and medical leadership in Kenya,” wrote KMPDC.
President William Ruto, on the advice of the Defence Council, promoted Brigadier Francis Njoroge Kuria to the rank of Major General and appointed him Director of Medical Services in the Kenya Defence Forces.

Education Background
Francis Njoroge trained as a medical doctor at the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in 1992.
Njoroge later advanced his studies at the same institution, obtaining a Master of Medicine in General Surgery (M.Med) in 2003.
Francis is a registered general surgeon and has also undertaken professional training in public health, leadership, and military medicine.
Francis Njoroge Career Background
In the public sector, he served as Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Health, where he was actively involved in the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During this time, he helped oversee the rollout of home-based care, developed guidelines for managing asymptomatic cases, and contributed to measures targeting long-distance truck drivers and cross-border movement.
He also took part in public briefings on testing, vaccination, and disease control, helping to shape Kenya’s overall pandemic response.
Beyond the pandemic, Njoroge chaired the National Emergency Medical Care Steering Committee, where he contributed to the development and implementation of Kenya’s Emergency Medical Care Policy (2020–2030), aimed at improving emergency response systems and strengthening both pre-hospital and hospital care.
Within the Kenya Defense Forces, he has served as a senior medical officer while continuing his work as a general surgeon.
