Nyamira gubernatorial aspirant Duke Ombagi declares that Jubilee deputy party leader Dr. Fred Matiang’i is the undisputed kingpin of the Gusii community.
He warns that the former CS currently commands the Gusii vote and that no candidate will win elections in the region without his endorsement and proper alignment.
“Fred Matiang’i is now the spokesperson for the Gusii community. He is the kingpin and the one giving direction. If you aspire to be anything in Gusii, you have to start looking for Fred Matiang’i right now,” Ombagi said.
Speaking in an interview with Teddy Ernest of The Kenya Times, Ombagi dismissed claims that other leaders in the region, including Kisii governor Simba Arati, wield comparable influence.
The Jubilee-linked politician also weighed in on the growing influence of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, attributing Linda Mwananchi’s large crowds in Kisii and Nyamira to Sifuna’s perceived closeness and alignment with Matiang’i.
“I don’t want to dismiss him. I really like how his ratings have been going up lately. He was in Kisii. You saw how we welcomed him. That was simply because he aligned with Fred Matiangi. If he was against Matiangi, he could not have received that reception. You saw the crowd’s reaction when he mentioned him.”
Ombagi advised that the entire opposition should rally behind a single candidate, while expressing confidence that Dr Fred Matiang’i would emerge as the top pick because of his exemplary performance in public service.
Duke Ombagi is a youth leader, the founder of Agenda 27, and a gubernatorial aspirant in Nyamira County, where he seeks to contest in 2027 under the Jubilee Party ticket. Throughout the interview, he cited poor healthcare services, inadequate road infrastructure, and youth unemployment as the key challenges facing Nyamira County.
