Sharon’s mother pleaded with the court to consider a non-custodial sentence for former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, saying a life or death sentence would cause her further pain.
Addressing the court during the sentencing on September 16, the mother quoted Genesis 13:11, which recounts how Abraham and Lot came together and resolved their conflict.
“When the accused was convicted, the family came to our home to ask for forgiveness. The two families came together, and since the accused, Okoth Obado, has been remorseful and asking for forgiveness, we said that the family has forgiven the first accused,” she said.
“If he goes for life-or-death sentencing, I will face another death in my family. I urge the court to release him and give me justice,” she said.
“I kindly urge the court not to crucify him,” she added.
The father supported a non-custodial sentence but struggled to contain his emotions as he spoke, breaking down in court.
Okoth Obado To Be Sentenced
Earlier, their lawyer said their testimonies should be heard but should not determine the sentence.
Their lawyer added that the consultations between the families were not forced or coerced it was mutual agreement.
The lawyer said the family was seeking compensation and restitution for the three children rather than for themselves.

He said Obado had been supporting the children and was willing to continue doing so.
The lawyer urged the court to consider this as part of Obado’s character and noted that his status as a public figure should not be used to buy him mercy.
He said a non-custodial sentence would allow Obado to return to society while continuing to provide structured support to the family.

Why Obado Should Be Released
Sharon’s parents’ lawyer said medical reports showed that Okoth suffers from hypertension, which he cited as one of the reasons the court should consider a non-custodial sentence.
He added that Okoth had already spent 88 days in custody.
The lawyer said that throughout the eight-year trial, Okoth had demonstrated that he could cooperate with the court and the community.
Earlier, Justice Cecilia Githua directed that the proceedings be adjourned to allow arrangements to be made for a Dholuo interpreter to facilitate the victims’ address.
She said the court would be informed once the arrangements had been made and that she would then issue further directions.
On July 23, 2026, High Court Judge Cecilia Githua ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt, establishing that Obado masterminded and financed the crime.
