The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by three countries, the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will have 48 teams competing in the group stages instead of the usual 32.
Increasing the number of teams was a dream of FIFA President Gianni Infantino: to make the World Cup more inclusive by allowing more countries from every part of the world to participate, expressing the belief that the World Cup should represent “the whole world.”
This change increases the number of matches from 64 to 104 games, making it the largest World Cup ever.
New Group Stage Format
Since the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the tournament’s group stage format has featured 32 teams split into eight groups of 4, resulting in 64 matches and a straightforward pathway to the Round of 16.

But in 2026, that changes: 48 teams (a 50% increase) and 104 matches (up from 64), with the 48 teams divided into 12 groups of 4 each.
Every team will play 3 matches in the group stage, one against each team in their group.
How Teams Will Advance to the Knockout Stage
Instead of 16 teams advancing like in earlier tournaments, 32 will advance from the group stage in the 2026 World Cup.
The increase in teams will introduce a new knockout round (a Round of 32 stage) that begins after the group stages.
| Who Qualifies | How Many Teams |
| Top 2 teams from each of the 12 groups | 24 teams |
| Best 8 third-placed teams from all groups.
This means even if a team finishes third in their group, they might still qualify. |

| Total advancing | 32 teams |

How Will the Best Third-Place Teams Ranked?
When deciding which eight third-placed teams advance, FIFA will use these rules in order:
- Points from all group matches
- Goal difference (goals scored minus goals lost)
- Total goals scored
- Fair play points (fewer yellow and red cards will add advantage)
- FIFA World Ranking
The team with more points, a better goal difference, or more goals scored will advance to the round of 32 stage.
The New Knockout Stage: Round of 32
After the group stage, the tournament will enter a new round: the Round of 32, which is the first time ever in World Cup history.
Knockout rounds will now have 5 stages instead of the previous 4:
- Round of 32 (new)
- Round of 16
- Quarter-finals
- Semi-finals
- Final
The national team that will win the World Cup will have to win up to 8 matches instead of 7, as Argentina did in the last one, in 2022.
