The 2026 World Cup ball, Trionda, combines design, technology, and precision to improve VAR (Video Assistant Referee) decisions and enhance gameplay.
As the World Cup starts on 11th June, Adidas officially introduced its newest soccer creation: the Adidas Trionda, which will be used in all the 104 matches in the tournament.
“The Official Match Ball for the FIFA World Cup 26 is here and it’s a beauty! I am happy and proud to present TRIONDA. adidas have created another iconic FIFA World Cup ball, with the design embodying the unity and passion of next year’s host nations Canada, Mexico, and the United States,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said during the launch of the World Cup match ball.
The Trionda ball is not just air and leather but a smart device that requires a charge before kickoff.

What Does “Trionda” Mean?
“Tri” means three (the three host countries), and “onda” means waves in Spanish and Portuguese.
“Trionda” literally means “three waves”, representing how Canada, Mexico, and the United States are coming together to host their first joint World Cup.
What the Colors on the Trionda Present
The Trionda is mainly white, with bold streaks in three colors.
Adidas chose these colors to honor the flags of the three host nations:
- Red represents the maple leaf of Canada.
- Green represents the independent spirit and eagle of Mexico.
- Blue represents the stars and stripes of the United States.
The design features flowing wave patterns inspired by “La Ola” (the stadium crowd wave) to symbolize fans coming together.
Trionda also has golden highlights placed across the panels to pay tribute to the glittering gold FIFA World Cup Trophy.
How the World Cup Ball Will Work
The World Cup ball packs more computing power than early mobile phones; inside one of the ball’s layers is a tiny 500Hz motion-sensor chip.
The motion-sensor chip tracks everything, including the ball’s exact location, speed, and its spin, 500 times every second.
Trionda’s sensor is battery-powered and will therefore need to be recharged in a special cradle at the stadium before every game.
Trionda’s internal rechargeable battery lasts for up to six hours of continuous play, making it easy to cover a 90-minute match and extra time.
The ball communicates instantly with 12 tracking cameras installed around each stadium’s roof, tasked with following the players from a distance, and together the ball and the cameras send live tracking data directly to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) room.
“This technology sends precise data to the video assistant referee (VAR) system in real time, enhancing match officials’ decision-making, including in relation to offside incidents,” FIFA stated.
The system will help referees make instant, semi-automated offside calls and immediately clarify whether a player accidentally touched the ball with their hand.

These advanced cameras will not just follow the players from a distance; they will use artificial intelligence (AI) to track 29 distinct points on each player’s body, including limbs, knees, and toes, 50 times per second, automatically draw offside lines in seconds, and check whether handballs are valid.
Fans and the spectators will be able to get access to all kinds of stats. Which shot had the most spin? Which goal was hit the hardest? Which strike absolutely flew off the laces?
Shape of Trionda
Trionda’s surface isn’t as smooth as the match balls used in the previous years; instead, Adidas reduced the panels to exactly 4, as compared to the previous match balls, which had many panels.
In addition, Trionda has special patterns called debossing (lines pressed into the surface) and embossed country icons (the maple leaf, eagle, and star raised slightly), which help keep the ball stable and easy for goalkeepers to catch, even in heavy rain, and help the ball fly steadier through the air.
