Bolt Comfort Rides Grows Sixfold In One Year As Kenyans Embrace Premium Trips

Bolt’s premium ride-hailing category, Comfort, has grown rapidly in Kenya over the past year, driven by rising demand for higher-quality transport options with newer vehicles, improved comfort, and highly rated drivers.

In a statement shared on Wednesday, September 16, Bolt said the monthly ride volumes on Bolt Comfort have increased more than sixfold since the category launched in Kenya in June 2025, while the number of monthly passengers using the service has grown more than fivefold over the same period.

The service is currently operating in Nairobi and Mombasa and has reached its highest monthly volume since launch.

The strong growth comes amid increasing segmentation in Kenya’s ride-hailing market, where operators are introducing multiple service tiers to cater to varying customer preferences and spending patterns.

Bolt Comfort Expansion Across Kenya

Bolt launched the Comfort category in a limited area of Nairobi in June 2025 and later expanded coverage to other parts of the city. In May 2026, Bolt Comfort was then started in Mombasa.

The rollout has contributed significantly to the increase in passenger numbers, with demand continuing to grow as more users gain access to the service.

According to data released by the company, monthly passenger numbers have risen by more than five times over the past year, reflecting growing interest among users seeking a premium ride experience.

Bolt Comfort offers larger, newer vehicles than standard ride categories while prioritizing service quality through stricter driver-performance requirements. The company says the category has consistently maintained an average passenger rating of approximately 4.9 out of 5 despite the rapid growth in ride volumes.

At the same time, estimated passenger pickup times have improved by about 18 percent year on year, suggesting more qualifying drivers are available within the network.

The category’s expansion into Mombasa highlights the growing demand for premium mobility services beyond Nairobi, where ride-hailing adoption has traditionally been concentrated.

Quality Standards Remain Central to the Service

Bolt attributes much of the category’s success to the quality-control measures introduced at launch and maintained as the service expanded.

Vehicles operating under the Comfort category must undergo a physical inspection before approval. The inspections are conducted through a partnership with a Kenyan automobile inspection provider using a Bolt-developed checklist covering vehicle condition, appearance, and overall suitability for the service.

To encourage participation, Bolt subsidizes part of the inspection costs for eligible drivers. Vehicles also undergo regular re-inspection cycles to ensure continued compliance.

Drivers in the category must maintain a minimum rating of 4.8 and demonstrate a strong service record. Those who fail to meet the required standards risk losing eligibility to provide Comfort trips.

According to Bolt’s Senior General Manager for Rides in East Africa, Dimmy Kanyankole, the growth of Comfort reflected passengers’ increasing focus on the type of vehicle and driver experience they receive.

“What this year has shown us is that passengers aren’t just looking for a ride; they’re looking for the right ride for their needs,” said Kanyankole.

He added that the company had focused on maintaining the category’s standards while expanding its availability.

Driver network nearly triples.

The number of drivers providing Comfort trips has nearly tripled since the category’s introduction, expanding availability and reducing passenger wait times.

The driver pool has enabled the company to distribute qualifying vehicles across Nairobi and Mombasa, reducing the distance between drivers and customers.

For drivers, the category provides access to a premium segment of the platform. Eligibility is based on vehicle quality and service performance.

The increase in driver numbers has directly supported the reported 18 percent improvement in estimated pickup times over the past year. As more eligible drivers join the category, passengers spend less time waiting while still receiving the service level associated with the premium offering.

Bolt says Comfort remains competitively priced against other premium ride-hailing options in the market despite its positioning as a higher-end service.

As the category enters its second year of operations in Kenya, Bolt says it will continue applying the same inspection, vehicle, and driver-performance standards that have guided its growth since launch.
