The wife of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye, Winnie Byanyima, has been appointed chair of the board of trustees of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED).
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) announced the appointment on November 3 and congratulated Byanyima on her new role.
“UNAIDS extends its warmest congratulations to the Executive Director of UNAIDS Winnie Byanyima on her appointment as chair of the board of trustees of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED),” read part of the announcement.
Byanyima will assume the position in January 2027 at IIED, an independent policy and research organisation that works on climate change, nature loss and inequality.
Winnie Byanyima Appointed Chair of IIED Board of Trustees
Byanyima said she was honoured to join IIED at a time when the sustainable development sector and multilateralism were facing significant challenges.
Winnie Byanyima noted that the organization shared her belief in working with communities, policymakers and civil society groups to achieve lasting change.
She added that she looked forward to working with the IIED team to advance sustainable and equitable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing development challenges.
“I’m honoured to join IIED as it continues to advocate for change during a difficult time for the sustainable development sector and multilateralism itself. We share the belief that lasting change comes from working in partnership with communities, policymakers and civil society organisations,” she said.
UNAIDS credited her with guiding the organization through a period of significant challenges and transformation, strengthening its foundations and supporting the global response to HIV and AIDS.

The organization also said her leadership had maintained a focus on evidence, data and human rights, with people living with HIV and affected communities at the centre of its work.
UNAIDS wished Byanyima well as she prepares to take up her new position at IIED in January.
Her appointment comes as she prepares to leave UNAIDS, where she serves as Executive Director. Her mandate is scheduled to end on December 31, 2026.
Byanyima announced her departure during a special session of the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board held on October 26.
She said she remained committed to leading the organization with energy and determination until the final day of her tenure.

What the Board Does
The Board of Trustees at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is responsible for providing strategic direction and overseeing the organization’s governance and operations.
Its duties include ensuring compliance with legal and charitable requirements, approving long-term strategies and policies, and monitoring financial management, budgets and institutional risks.
The board also appoints, supports and evaluates the Executive Director, safeguards the organisation’s reputation and values, and supports its fundraising activities.
It is further responsible for reviewing its composition to ensure it has the appropriate mix of skills, experience and diversity.
The board comprises unpaid volunteer representatives from different countries who serve renewable three-year terms, with a maximum tenure of six years.
Trustees are expected to commit approximately 15 days annually to the role, including preparing for and attending quarterly board and committee meetings. Some meetings are held online, while others take place in person in London.
