Several students from St. Thomas Aquinas Igumori School were injured on Wednesday after a school bus they were traveling in overturned along the Kiritiri–Kiambere road in Mbeere South.

According to reports, the bus lost control on a slippery section of the road under construction.

The students were heading to Ngenge Secondary School to participate in a music festival competition when the accident occurred.

The bus is said to have skidded off the road before overturning, causing panic among students and nearby residents, who quickly rushed to assist in the rescue efforts.

In photos shared online as seen by The Kenya Times, the school bus lied beside the road as students and members of the public tried to rescue those who were trapped inside

According to preliminary reports, the accident occurred on a section of the road undergoing construction works. Witnesses alleged that the surface had become slippery after a contractor working in the area spilled water on it, making it difficult for vehicles to maintain traction.

The bus reportedly lost control while navigating the affected stretch, skidded off the road, and overturned.

Emergency responders and members of the public quickly mobilized to rescue the students trapped in and around the overturned bus. The injured were evacuated and rushed to Kiritiri Health Center for urgent medical attention.

Following the incident, authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the accident. Key focus areas include the condition of the road at the time, the impact of ongoing construction works, and whether appropriate safety measures and signage were in place to warn motorists.

The Ongoing School Unrest

The government has stepped up interventions to address the rising cases of student unrest in schools across the country, following concerns over recurring disruptions that have affected learning and safety.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced that the Ministry of Education will form a multi-stakeholder team to review the underlying causes of school unrest and recommend long-term strategies to curb the challenge.

In a mini-reshuffle, President William Ruto moved John Ololtuaa to the State Department of Basic Education, swapping roles with Ambassador Julius Bitok.

The Ministry has maintained that schools will remain open, with the mid-term break for the Second Term of the 2026 School Year scheduled from 24th June to 28th June 2026. Parents have been urged to use the break to engage with learners and address behavioral concerns.
