Kenyan business editor with the Standard Group Media House Peter Wakaba won the top prize in the English Broadcast Category at the 9th Pan African Re/Insurance Journalism Awards.
The awards ceremony was held in Zimbabwe during the Continental Reinsurance annual CEO summit.
The story that gave Wakaba the win was his piece titled “Insurance Penetration in Kenya,” which highlighted the challenges faced by the country’s insurance industry, including a low insurance penetration rate of just 2.3% compared to the global average of 6%.
Wakaba’s insightful reporting raised awareness of the challenges faced by the industry and highlighted potential solutions and opportunities for growth.
In addition to Wakaba’s top prize, category champions, 1st and 2nd Runners-up in English, French, and Arabic categories were honored with cash prizes and trophies.
“1st and 2nd Runners-Up in English, French, and Arabic categories have been honored with cash prizes of USD 1,500, USD 1,000, and USD 500 respectively, along with trophies, in recognition of their outstanding submissions.” said the organization.

These exceptional winners were chosen from among 121 entrants from 18 African countries, highlighting the diversity and talent of journalists across the continent.

Peter Wakaba is a seasoned journalist with a demonstrated expertise in reporting on various topics related to Africa, including the economy, climate change, SMEs, and livelihoods.
He currently serves as the Economy Editor at the Standard Group PLC, where he has been since December 2023.
Also, Wakaba has extensive experience in the journalism industry, having held positions such as Consulting Editor at Uzalendo News, Senior Broadcast Journalist at BBC News, Acting Business Editor at BBC Africa and Senior Business Journalist at BBC.
He has also worked as an account manager at AVID Public Relations, Africa Business Editor at CGTN Africa and Deputy Business Editor at Standard Group PLC from January 2007 to December 2011.\
He holds a master’s degree in development communication from the University of Nairobi, a post graduate Diploma in Journalism & Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi, and a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature, Education from Egerton University.
