Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on Saturday, May 16, mourned the death of Capt. Maoz Israel Recanati, a 24-year-old platoon commander in the Golani Brigade, was killed by an explosive drone in southern Lebanon on Friday.
Recanati, from the West Bank community of Itamar, served in the 12th Battalion. He received a posthumous promotion from lieutenant to captain. He leaves behind his parents and six siblings.
Netanyahu’s Statement
Netanyahu released a statement Saturday evening after the IDF confirmed the death. “The entire people of Israel bows its head in mourning over Captain Maoz Israel Recanati, of blessed memory,” Netanyahu wrote.
“My wife and I send our heartfelt condolences to the family of Maoz, a heroic fighter who courageously led his soldiers against our enemies.”
Netanyahu added a personal detail that has struck many Israelis: Recanati was set to marry his fiancée, Rani, in about a month.
“Maoz was due to marry his fiancée, Rani, in about a month, and we all embrace her and his loved ones during this difficult hour,” the statement said. “May his memory be blessed and cherished in our hearts forever.”
The Samaria Regional Council, which includes Itamar, described Recanati as a dedicated officer who previously served in the Egoz commando unit.
Council head Yossi Dagan called him “one of the best of our sons” and noted that he came from a family that helped found the community.

“Our hearts are broken over a young life cut short just before he was to establish a home in Israel,” Dagan said.
Recanati is the latest Israeli soldier to die in southern Lebanon amid ongoing tensions with Hezbollah.
Reports indicate he is the seventh IDF soldier killed in the area since a U.S.-declared ceasefire took hold in mid-April. Israeli forces have continued operations there to counter persistent threats, including drone attacks.
The incident happened as Recanati led his troops in combat. One other soldier was lightly wounded in the same event, and a civilian contractor was also killed nearby, according to initial accounts.
In Israel, news of Recanati’s death went viral on Saturday as the country observed the end of Shabbat.
Photos of the young officer in uniform, smiling under his helmet with night-vision gear, circulated widely on social media. Many Israelis posted messages of grief and support for his family and fiancée.
The Golani Brigade has seen heavy action along the northern border since fighting intensified in late 2023.
The unit has lost several soldiers in clashes with Hezbollah fighters using drones, mortars, and anti-tank missiles.

Netanyahu’s office released the statement as part of his usual pattern of public mourning for fallen soldiers.
Israeli leaders often speak directly to the families in such cases, trying to honor the personal sacrifice while framing it within the larger conflict.
The death comes at a delicate time for Israel as ceasefire efforts with Hezbollah have held unevenly, with both sides accusing the other of violations.
Israeli officials have said they will keep pressure on the group to prevent it from rearming or threatening border communities.
Recanati’s Fiancée Mentioned by Netanyahu
Rani, the deceased soldier’s fiancée, has received public messages of support from across the country.
A rare personal touch that reveals the human cost behind the daily military reports, her name was specifically mentioned in Netanyahu’s statement.
Meanwhile, the IDF will continue with its operations in southern Lebanon, stating that such missions aim to push Hezbollah forces back from the border and degrade their capabilities.
The IDF is also conducting ongoing operations in Gaza, where it continues to target Hamas infrastructure and fighters.
Israel’s Air Force played a key role in the U.S.-led Operation Epic Fury against Iran earlier this year.
Before the current ceasefire between the United States and Iran took hold in early April, Israeli jets carried out thousands of airstrikes on Iranian military sites, missile production facilities, and other targets.
