Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has issued a statement warning to the public regarding the consumption of uninspected meat.
Mwaura emphasized the urgent need for rapid response and effective disease control measures in light of the public health concerns arising from outbreaks of Rift Valley Fever (RVF).
The government spokesperson also confirmed a case of the disease in North Horr, Marsabit County, with ongoing investigations to identify additional cases and assess the extent of the outbreak.
The surge in mosquito population following recent El Nino rains has been identified as a contributing factor, leading to increased transmission of vector-borne diseases.
“This outbreak is attributed to the recent El nino rains which led to a surge in mosquito population thus an increased transmission of vector borne diseases.
“All counties have been put on high alert for the potential spread of the disease,” part of the statement read.

Government Directive on Handling Meat
To mitigate the risk, the public is strongly advised to refrain from handling and consuming uninspected meat.
Additionally, individuals have been urged to use protective equipment when handling animal births, discard stillbirths, and appropriately dispose of carcasses.
Those experiencing fever symptoms are encouraged to seek assessment at the nearest health facility.
“Individuals experiencing fever are advised to visit the nearest health facility for assessment,” emphasized the government spokesperson.
In the statement seen by The Kenya Times, the spokesperson note that the government has distributed over 1.2 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets across the country, to protect citizens against mosquito-borne illnesses.
“The government has also distributed over 1.2millio insecticides-treated mosquito nets across the country, and members of the public are advised to use them,” said Mwaura.

According to the spokesperson, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Directorate of Veterinary Services and County Governments, is actively monitoring the situation and enhancing disease surveillance efforts.
He assured the public of government’s commitment to combating health emergencies and promoting agricultural prosperity during this critical period.
The gravity of the situation underscores the need for collective efforts to curb the spread of Rift Valley Fever and other related diseases.
