Safaricom has announced a special free call offer for its customers as the telecommunications company marks 25 years of operation in Kenya.

The announcement was delivered directly to subscribers via SMS and shared widely on social media, with the offer set to begin on December 18, 2025.

Under the offer, customers will receive 10 free minutes for their first call made during the promotional period.

“Tomorrow, your first call is on us! As we mark 25 years of transforming lives, enjoy 10 FREE minutes to connect, celebrate, and share the joy.”

Safaricom has, however, not yet issued a detailed public breakdown of the full terms and conditions, but the offer is part of broader customer appreciation activities tied to the company’s silver jubilee celebrations.

The free-calls initiative is running alongside Safaricom’s nationwide consumer promotion, dubbed Shangwe@25, which rewards customers for their continued support and loyalty. The promotion runs from October 31, 2025, to January 19, 2026.

Safaricom Shangwe@25 promotion details

The Shangwe@25 promotion is open to all Safaricom registered customers transacting on-net, including existing, inactive, and new customers who register during the promotion period. Eligible customers are automatically opted in.

Customers earn one entry point by carrying out qualifying transactions, including:

  • Any M-PESA transactions such as sending money or paying via Lipa na M-PESA
  • Purchasing voice or data bundles using airtime or M-PESA
  • Renewing Home Wi-Fi, PostPay, All-in-One or Emerald bundles
  • Redeeming every 100 Bonga Points

The promotion excludes corporate and SME customers, roaming customers, out-of-bundle GSM usage, agent deposits and withdrawals, airtime purchases via M-PESA, scratch cards, Sambaza or Okoa Jahazi, and airtime usage without purchasing a bundle.

Prizes on offer

Safaricom says more than 5 million customers will win daily and weekly prizes during the promotion. Daily prizes include M-PESA cash, free minutes, SMS and data bundles. Weekly draws will award Ksh10,000 cash to 43 winners per region.

The grand prize will see 25 customers each win Ksh1 million, alongside an additional Ksh250,000 to support a community project of their choice. Customers who win daily or weekly prizes remain eligible for the grand draw.

Other rewards include instant M-PESA cash prizes ranging from Ksh100 to Ksh10,000, airtime, data bundles, 5G routers, mobile devices, and festive-season rewards under the ‘Green Box’ experience.

Small and micro businesses will also benefit, with 25 businesses set to win Bajaj tricycles, while 15 large and medium enterprises will each receive Ksh500,000 to support community projects. Every week, five small and micro businesses will win stock worth Ksh250,000.

Customers can check their promotion points, prizes or opt out by accessing the Shangwe@25 banner on the M-PESA or mySafaricom App, or by dialing *334#, *544# or *444#. Daily draws are conducted every day, weekly draws every Friday, and winners are notified via SMS from ‘Safaricom’. Grand prize winners will be contacted by phone.

Company performance

Earlier in the year, Safaricom reported a 52.1 per cent growth in group net income to Ksh42.8 billion for the six months ended September 30, 2025, reflecting continued growth across its Kenya and Ethiopia operations.

In Kenya, the company recorded a 22.6 per cent increase in net income to Ksh58.2 billion, a 9.3 per cent rise in service revenue to Ksh194.0 billion, and a 13.1 per cent growth in EBIT to Ksh89.5 billion, underlining strong operational performance during the period.

Bundle depletion rate is now faster, and worrying.
A 250 mb which used to take 24hours, nowadays take 2hours only to get depleted for the same surfing for the last one week. Kindly Safaricom, reverse to that previous rate.

Safaricom consider me today for 1 Million prize. I will use the 250,000 to enhance water supply in my village. We merely depend on seasonal dams, and with the inadequate rains in Makueni county, the challenge of water is real.
