Safaricom has launched a new monthly data bundle dubbed Bundle ya Dere, a tailor-made solution designed to empower taxi drivers by lowering data costs, offering insurance protection, and providing free maps for easier navigation.

The launch took place at Ngong’ Hills Hotel, Nairobi, on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Safaricom’s Business Lead for the Nairobi Metropolitan Region, James Mutisia, said the introduction of the bundle followed extensive engagement with taxi drivers across different regions to understand the challenges they face at work.

“And in taking feedback from the drivers we engaged with, I think that is why we are here today—to introduce a bundle specifically tailored to suit your needs. We know you have many needs as drivers, especially staying connected with customers and families in a worry-free way,” said James.

Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, Chief Consumer Business Officer of Safaricom, said the new bundle is part of a broader strategy to transform the lives of drivers and other groups.

“This has been a journey, and we started it with you. Our first meeting was in Mombasa where we engaged with drivers. As we celebrate 25 years, we believe we must change the game—it cannot only be about selling bundles, minutes, or SMS. We have to look at the individual and ask, what can we do to change their life? The best way is to focus on groups, what we call segments. We started with boda riders and have now come to drivers,” Fawzia stated.

The newly launched bundle comes with Tuunza Mapato Insurance, underwritten by Turaco Insurance in partnership with Safaricom. The bundle includes data, call minutes (Kredo), and free access to up to four taxi driver apps, along with free Google Maps.

Subscribers also enjoy discounted fuel deals at all Shell petrol stations nationwide, through Safaricom’s partnership with Shell.

For Ksh 2,000 per month, taxi drivers will receive:

  • 25GB of data
  • Tuunza Mapato Insurance (hospital cash, funeral expenses, and accidental medical reimbursement)
  • Free access to Uber, Yego, Faras, and Bolt driver apps
  • Free Google Maps
  • Discounted fuel deals at Shell stations
  • Kredo –Ksh 300

Purchases can only be made via M-PESA.

Insurance Benefits Under Tuunza Mapato

Under the Tuunza Mapato cover, taxi drivers enjoy a comprehensive package of insurance benefits. In the event of hospitalization, they are entitled to hospital cash payouts of up to Ksh 30,000 per year. This is paid via M-PESA after discharge, at a rate of Ksh 1,000 per night from the very first night of admission.

In the unfortunate event that a driver passes away due to illness or accident, their next of kin receives a one-time funeral expense payout of KSh 100,000 to help ease the financial burden.

Additionally, the cover provides up to Ksh 15,000 in accidental medical reimbursement, which caters to outpatient treatment costs if a driver is injured in an accident.

How to Subscribe

Drivers can dial 5446# or 5556# (for S-Hook taxi drivers). Alternatively, dial *544# or *555#, select Data Deals, then choose Bundle ya Dere.

Claims Process

Coverage under Tuunza Mapato starts at midnight following the day of purchase and remains valid for 30 days. To stay covered, drivers must purchase Bundle ya Dere every month.

To claim, drivers can call Turaco toll-free at 0800 221 245 or WhatsApp 0768 387 245. Claims must be reported within 30 days of the event, and payouts are made directly to M-PESA within three business days after documentation and verification.
