Safaricom is set to roll out a new M-PESA feature that allows an Account Holder to give another person controlled access to spend directly from their M-Pesa wallet.
The new feature will be called Shiriki Pay and will be accessed through M-pesa app, Sim Tool Kit, and My Safaricom App.
Once launched, users can join the service, give access to another person, and also leave the service.
Shiriki Pay also enables someone to manage finances by making spending transparent when they can only spend at legitimate merchants, and you can see the transaction history.
The innovation targets parents granting children controlled access, students managing their own spending, small business owners allowing staff to make purchases, household workers paying bills and buying groceries, and couples managing shared finances.

How Shiriki Pay Feature Works
The service operates between two registered M-PESA users: the account holder, who is responsible for everything, and the authorized user, who has limited access.
To set someone up as an Authorized User, the Account Holder provides their phone number, full name, contact details, and any other verification documents that Safaricom may require.
Authorization is completed through the M-PESA App using the Account Holder’s PIN, which remains confidential.
Before confirming, the Account Holder reviews the Authorized User’s details to ensure accuracy and security.
The account holder sets the spending limit to prevent the Authorized User from overspending from the M-Pesa wallet.
The transaction costs are subject to the normal M-Pesa transaction fees set by Safaricom.
Authorized Users can make payments directly to merchants through Lipa na M-PESA (Buy Goods & Paybill) and Pochi la Biashara merchants.

Limitations of Safaricom’s Shiriki Pay
To protect users, the service is limited to authorized users. The restrictions include:
-
Spending cannot exceed the Account Holder’s set limit.
-
Cash withdrawals or sending money to other individuals is not allowed.
-
The Account Holder can revoke access at any time.
-
The Authorized User can also stop using the service at any time.
-
Transactions that have already been completed cannot be reversed.
-
Person-to-person transfers are allowed.
Safaricom also has the right to suspend or terminate access for either party without prior notice in cases of suspected fraud, security threats, incomplete identity verification, or legal requirements.
