Patricia Mande Nyaundi, SC, is a Judge of the High Court of Kenya, appointed in December 2022, and currently serves in the Family Division at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.
Career and Experience
Before her judicial appointment, Justice Nyaundi had a distinguished career in human rights and legal leadership.
Mande Nyaundi was conferred the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel in 2020.
Patricia Mande Nyaundi served as the CEO of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) and the CEO of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC).
The lawyer was the Executive Director of the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Kenya).

She served as a Rule of Law Advisor in the Office of the Chief Justice (NCAJ) and was the Regional Director for Crisis Action.
Mande was admitted to the bar in 1991.
In her role as a High Court Judge, she has presided over significant matters, including a 2023 ruling that clarified marriage laws, stating that couples opting for Christian marriages, or other non-civil forms, are not required to obtain a certificate confirming they have no existing marriage, as that is a requirement only for civil marriages.
Early Life and Educational Background
Hon. Lady Justice Patricia Mande Nyaundi, SC, was born in Busia County in Kenya, and her academic journey is marked by a deep specialization in human rights and leadership.
Master of Laws (LLM)- the lawyer holds a master’s degree in Human Rights Law.

She completed her undergraduate legal studies, Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and was admitted to the Kenyan Bar in 1991.
Mande Nyaundi holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
Beyond her formal degrees, Justice Nyaundi has pursued specialized leadership training and completed the Strategic Leadership Development Programme (SLDP) at the Kenya School of Government, as well as attending leadership training at Strathmore University.

Beyond conferment as a senior counsel in 2020, Nyaunde was also appointed to the High Court in 2022.
Delivering a landmark ruling clarifying that couples opting for Christian marriages do not require a “no-objection” certificate.
She is one of the few individuals to have served as the Chief Executive Officer of two major statutory bodies:
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) and The Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC).
FIDA Kenya Leadership, championing women’s rights, spearheading legal aid and advocacy for marginalized women.
Serving as Regional Director for Crisis Action, where she coordinated international efforts to protect civilians in conflict zones across Africa.
Contributing to systemic legal reforms as a Rule of Law Advisor in the Office of the Chief Justice (NCAJ).
