About River Tana
The Tana River, Kenya’s longest river, stretches over 1,000 kilometers from the Aberdare Mountains to the Indian Ocean.
Originating in the highlands, it flows through diverse landscapes, including forests, savannas, and arid regions, before forming a vast delta at Kipini.

The river supports rich biodiversity, hosting hippos, crocodiles, and numerous bird species.
It’s vital for local communities, particularly the Pokomo and Orma, who rely on it for fishing, farming, and water.
The Tana also powers hydroelectric dams like those in the Seven Forks Scheme, generating much of Kenya’s electricity. However, seasonal flooding and human-wildlife conflicts pose challenges to the region.
