Homa Bay High School is a public extra-county boys’ secondary school located in Homa Bay County.
The learning institution was established in 1964 by the late Tom Mboya, who was the then Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in Kenya, a post he had held since June 1963. At the time, he also served as a Member of Parliament for Nairobi Central Constituency.
The ‘A’ level stream at Homa Bay High School was phased out in 1989 when Kenya’s education system changed to the 8-4-4 system.
Since then, admissions at the school were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.
This was, however, replaced in 2023 by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.

Each year, over 400 students are admitted to the institution based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with the Ministry of Education’s policy.

Homa Bay High School has, over the years, continued to post stellar results in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) national examinations, featuring among the top 200 countrywide.
The government has previously issued a directive to all institutions regarding the total fees parents should pay per year.
The total annual fees per student at Homa Bay High School is approximately Ksh40,535, which serves as the fee cap set by the Ministry of Education for extra county schools in Kenya.
However, the actual fees may differ slightly from one school to another due to extra charges imposed by individual institutions for items like uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.
